squeak squeak squeak.........
« on: February 12, 2009, 07:06:47 PM »

Hi everyone,

Ao drinving for five minutes today and all of a sudden....squeak squeak squeak. Quite high pitched and frequency is matched to the speed of the vehicle. Don't know if it has anything to do with it but had to drive through some deep water a couple of days ago due to road flooded (easily up to the middle of the wheels, probably higher).

Anyone else had this problem? not a wheel bearing or grit stuck against disc. the faster I go it becomes less audible (30mph plus) slower I go and it's much louder. thinking is could be warped disc(s)?

So could it be:

Warped discs
Driveshaft bearing
CV joint
Something more painful.

Thought I nly had the clutch pack problem to contend with and now this!

All help gratefully received.

Cheers

After some investigation been told the u joint is a bit knackered so thats getting replaced (is that the cardan joint? four point cross joint thingy?). Damn I really need to get some spannering under my belt on this jeep, wanting to fix it but don;t wan to break it more in the process! The boot wasn't secured properly either so that wouldn't have helped.

Cheers everyone

give lighthouse a ring for prices on the uj's. there is a few good writeups on how to change them as they are not that hard to do.

not grand cherry related but the priciples are the same

Haven't had the u joints replaced yet and it's squealling like a b****. However due to inspecting the jeep all over i've found and had to replace the following:

Front discs
Front Pads
Front drivers side brake caliper
Rear brake pads

And

Rear lower suspension bushes need replacing
Front roll bar bushes need replaing
Some other bloody bushes need replacing
And the squealling needs sorting.

Ho hum....... not feeling a lot of love towards the jeep and £440 lighter :o(

Is there any other likely suspects for the squealling? It's high pitched and sounds too loud to be inside a case of something (similar to a fan belt slip but only speeds up with the movement of the vehicle). Would it likely be anything else on the drivetrain other than the u joints?

How do I drop and grease it and which bit am I looking for? is it a case of unbolting and where do I inject grease? Should it be replaced?

The other parts were shagged as the front caliper was worn and twisting slight when braking. When I looked at the break disc the pad was wearing right on the very edge of the disc and the pad wasn't evenly worn across the surface. I replaced the passenger side one last year so it stands to reason that it wouldn't be long until the other went.

I was there when the rear pads were removed and there was only a couple of mm left on them. Was charged £35 hour labour which wasn't too bad.

see my earlier post on how to grease, its easier if prop is on the floor, so drop skid plate, undo prop bolts and there it is

ok got grease gun and got under jeep to have a look. I've got this pic as well (file attached)

Where do I poke the the needle attachment. I would assume that I've got to remove the caps of the joint.

Sorry for acting like a complete noob!

Looking at that ...10 fits into 9 which has a rubber boot around it, slide the nozzle of the grease gun under the rubber boot and get as much grease in as possible whilst working the joint.
You will have to drop the prop to do it..undo the 8mm bolts holding the UJ straps at the pinion yoke [axle end] and undo bolts at the transfer case end and off it comes.
Use threadlock when putting the bolts back.
Or you could fetch it apart completely and overhaul/replace it.. write up

Ahh its becoming clearer now. So it's not actually the u joints causing the squeak but the joint between the two u joints in the middle of the assembly!

I guess someone like lighthouse will be able to sell me the ball centering kit to be able to overhaul and in the meantime i'll pack it with grease to see if this eliminates the problem. As this hasn't been looked after too well I should imagine the u joints themselves are tired and need replacing.

Do all the u joints fotted as standard have zerc points to regrease with a gun? when having a feel around I couldn't feel them

Thanks

I'll take the shaft off tomorrow and get a needle adapter.

If you go for a spin whilst the front prop is off you will know if that was the cause of the squeek, you will also be able to tell if the joint is dry once its off.
Lighthouse will do the lot, the stock UJ's arent greasable and dont have a zerk but the replacements are if you ask for them..
Dont expect much change out of £160 for the centre ball assembly and UJ's.

Ahh crap!

I'll have to pack it with grease for now then. already shelled out £440 and I need to get a couple of bushes fitted for the mot on the lower suspension arm (the bottom large ones)

Cheers for all the info

Cheers thats really helpful.

Got under the jeep on Sunday, jacked it up to get the shafts turning and it's definately the front double cardan joint. I injected grease into the joint but hasn't done a damn thing.

Phone call today to lighthouse and I've got two U joints coming £24 each(with grease nipples for longer life), central joint bearing thingy £69 and while I was at it I was going to order the four bushes for the two lower suspension arms but remember the arse of a job it was to replace a bush on my old BMW they advised that sometimes the arms need welding etc etc and can offer the complete arm with bushes pre installed for £39 ......I'll have two of those then please cheers!!!!

Hopefully it will all turn up and i'm planning to do it Sunday.

Cheers everyone for all your help, suggestions, links and photos. saved me a packed and i've decided i'm gonna spanner the jeep myself from now on.......

never had lighthouse let me down yet.In fact they have gone well out of the way at times to assist, if only jeep dealers had the same attitude jeeping would be better for it!

We'll just one last question before I did the joint tomorrow.....

In the Chrysler manual for the GC it says not to remove the locking bolt on the front as it may cause vibration after refitting? what are they talking about here?

From What I can see you remove the six bolts at the front of the prop shatf past the CV joint as per this pic:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hZrcIHMIYxg/R ... +joint.jpg

and then the four bolts at the other end on the yoke.

ALSO.....  any pointers / pitfalls for swapping out the lower suspension arms?

Cheers

To preserve the balancing of the propshaft mark every seperate bit of the shaft and the position it was fitted to the axle and transfer case yokes so it all goes back in the same position. Do the arms one at a time and dont tighten the bolts until the weight of the car is on the suspension so the bushes are in their normal running position.

The jeep is restored to a non squeaking operation. Thanks to everyone who give me some tips and advice, first major work i've done on the jeep. I didn't have time to do the lower arms as I lost the light.

Overhaul of double cardan joint took me five hours. for anyone thinking of doing this i'd advise the following:

You will need a BIG engineers vice to press in the Ujoint caps. My engineers vice which is a medium size was just to small and I had to borrow one.
Watch for the needle bearings falling into the cap. don't think you can tap them on with a socket and hammer.
You will likely have to bang out the old Ujoint caps with a nice heavy lump hammer and socket.
Make sure the rubber coller on the bearing yoke is seated correctly.

The shaft came off very easily although I did soak the bolts in WD40 the day before.

Cheers
