power steering noise
« on: March 15, 2009, 08:31:55 AM »

hi i wonder if any one can give me some help please.have a 2001 grand cherokee 3.1td and when stood still and i turn the steering there is a loud groaning noise from the power steering.i looked under the hood and got the wheel turned and the noise came from the pump.the steering also is sometimes really hard to move ,other times it is very easy.the fluid looks quite brown and smells burnt.I have never changed the fluid,do you think this could be the problem.
Is there a special fluid or any universal fluid would be ok.Is there any drain off points on the pump or system
thanks for any help on this peter

You need the correct Mopar power steering fluid from a Jeep dealer (don't panic, it isn't expensive) which is almost clear in colour. There is no drain plug, disconnect a hose and lose as much fluid as you can, then flushb with clean fluid before reconnecting. Bear in mind Hydraulic noises in the PAS are common in the WG/WJ Grand, Jeep never really cured them 100% in spite of several attempts.
