Rear Axle XJ 2000
« on: March 16, 2009, 07:16:07 PM »

Hi Guys
Ok , I need help from you experts on here.
I have a Cherokee XJ reg 2000 with bearing rumble from the back axle. It sounds like it is the wheel bearings on the shafts , so tonight I decided to do some exploratory surgery. I read said manual where it says " after removal of brake drum , remove the four bolts securing the backing plate via hole in the wheel flange"   no hole !!!
It then says attatch axle hub puller ( which I have ) and using the slide hammer , remove the shaft from the axle. Obviously could not do this without removing the nuts.

Do I have to take the shoes off and remove the bolts from behind the flage ,? or is ther something I am missing here. Will the shaft pull without removing these bolts on this model ( I know but I had to ask).. Secondly , am I barking up the wrong tree and could the noise be from the diff itself , or the UJ on the driveshaft, or the bearing where the driveshaft spline enters the axle??

I know .. lots of questions, but I will be most greteful for any help or advise given .

Thanks in advance

You're reading the instructions for the wrong axle.

Thanks again.

It's no surprise I was wrong BUbba.. these jeeps are really catching me out on parts.. not done any work on cars for years.

Any suggestions where I could get a bearing kit for this axle at a reasonable cost.. don't wanna use our local dealer cos Captain Jack springs to mind every time I go there.

At the very least they could take me to dinner before screwing me  :-D

Dont waste money on parts till you've stripped and inspected. Frequently it's the diff carrier bearings making wheelbearing like noises.

Hi Mike
I was gonna do that anyways, so that I can get the bearing numbes off the old ones .. I will obviously inspect and then replace any suspect ones.

Now plucking up the courage to strip the thing down   but I will persevere .
