I have been offered a second hand axle in good condition. It is off P reg 2.5 diesel cherry.. will this fit my w reg cherry 4.0 or asre the ratios in the differential wrong, cos visually it looks the same as the one fitted to my jeep.
any advise would be great thanks

Damn shame really as the cost of the axle was loads cheaper than new bearings .... oh well

Dont people change to these axles on a 4ltr to go to 33-35 tyres

Get the front axle too, then you are good to run 31" + tyres without affecting your gearing as above post says.

Nice idea Gordy.
But my mother would never get in the car then .. she's only 5foot lol.
unfortuneately mine will unlikely ever see offroad, unless I get stuck on some farm somewhere. I do use my xj to go where my van won't go to see some of my clients.
so mostly end up on forestry roads rather than dedicated offroad, having said that it does the job required just fine, and will carry a good load of tools in the bargain.

Got one being delivered tomorrow.

will try and take piccis of the swap over with a brief decription .. never know , it might help some other person like me to see what happens.. ( this could be train crash )

the rear axle swap is very simple, the hardest bit is bleeding the rear brakes

Ah .. now I do have hose clamps and an easy bleed kit .  rubber tube with valve in and a jam jar lol.

It's the weight of the damn thing that's got me concerned... coupla trolley jacks should do it.

I have new brakes going on all round also as a matter of course, a few bottles of axle juice and some addative for the diff.

can't wait to get at it .

If you're not going to lift it, and they're OK, I'd keep the std ones.

you only need on hose clamp, the rear breaks run off one common brake line with the axle breather bolt holding the brake pipe split unionon the axle. the axle isn't that hard to lift, jack up one side and hold it in place with the u bolts then jack the other and do the same. the adjust the axle so it locates on the springs then jack up further and retighten the u bolts. do the same for the other side then tighten the u bolts full when the axle is in the correct position.
 you will see how simple it is when you get started

Hi Dave, Thanks for the advise, it was pretty mcuh the way I was thinking .. I have changed axles before , but many moons ago  ( MKI Escort ) showing my age now  

So the brakes are linked across the axle then ? with only one side as the supply in ?.
Hopefully should go fairly straightforward.

Fitted new axle today .
forgot to take any photos as I was going along .
Reasonably starightforward to do . Only prob I had was when I went to fit new brake shoes, the ones I had been supplied were incorrect .. pain ..
Fortuneately the ones on the new axle were ok so put them back on .. refund tomorrow

All in all a good days work .. nice quiet Jeep now .

next is new springs and shockers .. could not afford all in one go .
