Hello all

I am after some advice. Do to the fact that the rear cross member/bumper mount section on the TJ chassis has the strength of chocolate (Damaged mine with a little bump, it alowed the bumper bolts to try and pull through, bending the bumper up at an angle and mis shaping the cross member) I have to remove my fuel tank and with the aid of Mr Hog replace that part of the chassis with something man enough to take my rear winch bumper. I have always had an issue with the fuel tank and how tight everything is at the rear end. So am thinking of putting a fuel cell inside the truck in the back. I am not knowledgeable about fuel cells and the regs etc and was wondering if its even possible to still pass an mot with one? Also I know there is foam available for them to increase saftey but at a cost?

My other option, once the bumper cross member is fabbed, which is mega work and more time for Mr Hog is to also remove the upper rear chassis brace that the shocks bolt too. Allowing a hole to be cut in the rear floor area. Then fab a new rear chassis brace with an upturned U shape still allowing the shocks to mount as normal but also enabling the tank to be raised about 3-4 inches into the rear. Then fab a new floor around it so its still an external tank but completely out of the way.

if your gonna go for a cab top its ok to put a tank in the back but i would never put one inside the jeep with ya. i spose you could look into fuel cells but even then you are far safer with the fuel as far away from you as pos. just me thoughts.

if the fuel cell is FIA approved in construction then there should not be any problems. these are normally built with a foam internal to stop the explosion risk. you probably will fix it more securely than it would be fitted in it's origional position. normally these tanks are smaller than the ones slung underneath.

The only criteria for MoT is that it is secure and doesn't leak.

Not sure what the space is like on a TJ, but have you looked into getting a tank out of a different car and mounting it into the floor under the rear seat?

Just a quick look in my shed and I recon a VW Beetle tank would be do-able on a CJ (not that I intend to do it) but if you could it would have several advantages, mounted high, wont take up cabin space, off the shelf tank(cheaper) and possibly a working fuel gauge

i think as mr p said secure and no leaks as far as mot goes

and i agree with mr dave a good quality fuel cell shoud not be a problem

I recall one of the first mods I and a lot of other people used to do with old 80” Series 1 Land Rovers used for RTV trialing was to bolt the standard tank in the back which increased the ground clearance. The tank was standard and was probably better protected there than under the seat!

Would a pair of twin tanks from Lightweight fit? They are self-contained with a good screw top and built-in sender units.

what you have to remember is what is the origional tank capacity ?. whatever tank you put inside has a strong chance of being smaller than what was O.E so reducing the playtime or mileage before refills.
 common sense says go for a proper fuel cell or twin fuel cell setup but these are inherantly safer and do come with a premium price tag around the £500 mark

or use another and put some baffle foam inside to reduce the movement of the fuel. a beetle tank out of a 1200/1300 would be close to what you might need as they are flat. but hwether they will fit in the space might be an issue

Have a at Mike Cuff's of J33P club he seem to have put standard TJ tank in boot area but his TJ is more pick up at the back so you would lose rear seat. Cheap fix tho.

Apache from Bucks Jeep Club has a stock YJ tank mounted back to front in the boot area. We also fabbed a full height steel bulkhead behind the seats and a recessed fuel filler in the quarter panel behind the driver's door. Just leaves enough room in the rear bed for an air tank , rear coilovers and rear winch.

I'm doing something similar on my YJ, but cutting the rear floor out and sinking the tank down lower, using the original bash plate and straps. Who needs rear seats anyway?
