Squeaky fan belt !
« on: April 05, 2009, 02:51:11 PM »

Hi,
I have just got my 4.0L YJ Wrangler taxed after a six month lay-up.I fitted the battery and it started first go. The only problem is a very load squeak (I had to put ear plugs in, it hurt so much). I gave the belt a lube and the noise goes but only when being sprayed. It returnes as soon as I stop spraying. The pullys are all turning but the power steering/alternator pullys got very hot almost instantly. The belt was new just before the lay-up and it has the correct tension(I think). The engine has not been turned over in the last six months.

Does it look like it's a knackerd bearing or a belt problem ?   :?:

Regards, Rob.

They all do that sir........

Well I have to admit my YJ did when I put new battery on it on New Years Eve after sitting out in the winter rain for 2 months with no starting.  It will go away .......... soon but I tracked mine down to the idler pulley that is just below where the aircon would be if I had it........ Lube that you should be OK.

Took the belt off tonight and the alternator is seized solid (having sat unused for 6 months).
I should have spotted it sooner. Dont know if a recon alternator is needed or new bearings fitted ?

Spray a load of WD40 in it and let it soak.

I bitt the bullet and got a new one, £120 inc of vat, off the shelf in a Plymouth alternator/starter shop. Good price me thinks !
