RHD to LHD swop?
« on: April 09, 2009, 02:23:10 PM »

I'm thinking about using my good YJ tub to resurect O.M.G. (thats it's reg no) aka Yellow Perill II

OMG is a 1980 CJ7 Laredo auto (non Q/T) with LHD, as you can see the original tub is errrrm.... beyond economical repair.

Apart from the usual reworking of the (RHD) YJ tub to take the fuel filler, body mounts etc

How much extra work am I letting myself in for converting to LHD????

I'd been told that there was a "doubler" pressing on the firewall that needed changing for the LHD one.

I ain't looked at it close yet though.

Ahem.

That aint my handywork matey!

I know I'm rough, but I ain't that rough

T'was like it when I bought it.

The whole of the tub has been bodged up by what I call "overplating"

In other words, find a rust hole, slap a plate over it, weld round the edge.

Couple o' years later, when it's rusted through again, slap some more plates over the old plates, weld round 'em.

I can't be arsed to fuck about with that sort o' bodgery.

whats the CJ bulkhead like?

why not put RHD bulkhead into LHD tub (think thats the right way round) that way no need to change any mechs.

Rotting around the hinge mounts and the "A" shaped bit.

The YJ tub is near mint except for one dent in the NS side panel.

I don't HAVE to convert to LHD but I've always fancied a left hooker.

CJ dash plate IE whole dash will bolt on YJ tub and do go LHD I spent ages looking for a decent LHD YJ to swap from my RHD YJ
if you see what `i mean.

BENEFITS are cheaper steering goodies that you can't get for 'postal Jeeps'!
Beefed up steering boxes cross over linkages etc etc. no negatives at all as far as this camper is concerned....

Also I get the choice of all them fancy dashboard overlays 'n' stuff wot they make for LHD but aint available for RHD

I've got two spare LHD steering boxes off FSJs which had the bicycle chain jobby under the dash.

But I'll be sticking with GM Saginaw thanks, I've heard a lot of negative things about AGM Superboxes.......

As all UK RHD YJs were built as LHD then converted to RHD in Dover, should be a doddle.

There IS a doubler plate around the steering and pedal mount holes - I guess it's just to beef up the area so the pedals don't flex the firewall as you work them (flexing will eventually lead to cracking).

You should have a LHD doubler on the rotten CJ tub which you should be able to locate the spot welds and drill through them.  This doubler should be a good fit onto the YJ tub, giving you the added bonus of having the holes all in the right places!!

I know this because I would like to swap to LHD on mine, which is a RHD CJ with a RHD YJ TUB.

Good luck with it dude!

Ric.

I had one, a '95 Canadian import =D>

I rebuilt the rear diff, got a couple of good doors (from Mr. Wildwood IIRC), a new soft top and drove it around for a year.

Traded it in for a f**kin' Yota Smurf............. #-o  #-o  #-o

So you had me black doors then.
Nice one.......

Got my 91 Howes Safari LHD YJ for £2,000 it had a new engine 25K on it so had to have it. Next day a bloke gets hold of an old Jeepworld mag and calls me thinking I'm a breaker. end up selling the hardtop poncie green canvas seats and door panels for £600!
Bloke also gets me to fit 1" body lift and 2.5 inch suspension lift  to his 92 RHD (Yes I tell him I'm a cabinetmaker!) charged £400 for that....
So I guess a few sweaty weekends and it owed me £1,000

Then I swapped all the goodies from my black YJ and outed that for £2,500

That my Birty friends is the only time that any car dealing exploits have EVER gone in my favour!

Footnote
One month later the same bloke wants to sell his YJ and wants to go back to stock.. I reluctantly do the business... November on cold gravel in the rain and don't charge him just keep the 2.5 inch lift.....

Which is still hanging in my workshop (cos its a Pro Comp lift!!!!!)

Funny old world????

Thats what I've always understood about CJ tubs, that they are LHD/RHD specific.

But then on the other hand

Does that mean YJ tubs are not handed, or did the importers have to fit bracing plates as they converted them.

Thinking about it, I'm surprised that Chrysler Jeep would have done that, considering they were selling the YJ as an official UK spec model.
Howes Motors/AMC/Renault definately 'cos it were a bit of a dark time for Jeep Corp before Chrysler bought them out.

Then again I can't figure out why they ever bothered with the "bicycle chain" steering conversion on J series when they could do a full conversion for less money?

AGR stufffffff!!!!!!!
Also heard lots of negative reports and short lifespan stories.

After I bought a pump of course..........

Have to say the pump works at the moment........ looks the same as the factory jobbie.........
and bugger me performs like the factory jobbie. Can't feel the steering being any lighter..... and real reason was to make Milemarker faster..... doesn't do that either......

As I.O.M. would say 'SNAKE OIL!'

If ya got a 4.2 I6 or AMC V8 they run a 'P-pump' and there is a factory version used by other bigger vehicles
that is the P1400 that is the monster to go for especially if your running ram assist. That and a J series box and your done.

Or you could hemmorage $$$$$ and get the similar fix from Poison Spyder  (the steering side of the company are still in action I think)

...............Takes off anorak and gets back to work....................

Errrrr...... No thanks

They'd rather tip a truck load o' money at it, spent on some overpriced high spec gizmo off some flashy website. :vom:

Being as all the CJ/J series steering is GM based, you should find the J20 sized box on some of their pickups.
