xj heater & air con
« on: July 01, 2009, 07:47:41 AM »

My XJ 2000 Orvis has a prob with heater .. will not blow anywhere other than at windscreen .. Read other posts in here that this is all vacuum controlled.
The vent position switch does absolutely nuffin. I checked manual .. it says that there is a reservoir behind the front bumper .. took said bumper off .. no reservoir.. no pipes hanging about just nothing there... so in essence my heater will only blow up, and is always on hot .. not good in this weather.
any ideas wheather this reservoir may be located elsewhere on my model .. or do you all think someone has nicked it .
any help most greatfully recieved

It should definitely be there, its a round ball about 6" in diameter with 2 brackets molded to it. I know it is there because I had to move mine when I made my own winch bumper for my 2000 4ltr. In fact I have found a picture of it -

I had to move mine back into the engine bay near the ABS pump on the passenger side inner wing. If you can find the pipework then replacing the ball should sort out your problems. I do have a spare one I can sell you if you need it.

Is your Jeep diesel, cause I don't think diesel's have 'em???????????.  Mine does'nt (well not behind the bumper anyway).  No idea where it is.  Someone bound to post up with more info on this.  Maybe worth investigating an electrical fault, and check the heater-A/C control panel.

Below is cut from the factory service manual.

HEATER AND AIR CONDITIONER CONTROL

DESCRIPTION

Both the heater-only and heater-A/C systems use a
combination of mechanical, electrical, and vacuum
controls.
These controls provide the vehicle operator
with a number of setting options to help control the
climate and comfort within the vehicle. Refer to the
owner’s manual in the vehicle glove box for more
information on the features, use, and suggested operation
of these controls.

OPERATION

The heater-only or heater-A/C control panel is
located to the right of the instrument cluster on the
instrument panel. The control panel contains a rotary-
type temperature control knob, a rotary-type mode
control switch knob, and a rotary-type blower motor
speed switch knob.

The heater-only or heater-A/C control panel cannot
be repaired. If faulty or damaged, the entire unit
must be replaced. The illumination lamps are available
for service replacement.

I have checked fuses and such like , all ok .
