Hi all
Haven't posted on here for a while.
My 98 4.0 Grand has expired today. Been on a long trip today, had done 325 miles no problem, then just as I turned into a carpark it cut out. Wouldn't restart, just seems to be cranking over fast with no attempt to fire. Also noticed none of the gauges are registering when the ignition is on and the overhead display comes on but all mpg fig's etc are blank.
Had the AA come out, who after an hour of tests etc decided they couldn't get it going. There is no spark and apparently no power feed to the injectors. Had to come home 125 miles on back of lorry.
I spoke to Jeep garage who suggested it could be the `dash pod'.
Can anyone throw any light on this before I book it in dealers for diognostic? At great expense.

Sounds like something's disrupting the CCD bus network. Without Chrysler diagnostic gear, difficult to sort. Try disconnecting the crank sensor, It won't start without this, but if the dash comes back to life, you know it's causing the problem. If this doesn't work, do the same with the distributor, lambda sensors and any other stuff on the engine till the dash comes back. It could even bee caused by something else daft like a door module.

Could be the auto shut down relay. Try swapping it with another. Did the AA guy hook up a code reader or was he just guessing?

The AA man did hook up the diagnostic but wouldn't talk to it. He was told Jeeps won't!
Jonny, where's the relay you mention?
I had to do an emergency stop about 1 mile before it stopped.
Maybe it dislodged something that was loose maybe. Just wild guesses at min tho.

Bollox.

I have a £12 scanner that will work on a Jeep. However, if the bus network is down, no scanner will communicate with it properly. The ASD relay is in the fuse box under the hood, the location is marked in the lid. Just swap it for the horn relay, if the horn still works it's ok.

tried the ASD relay as suggested, that appears OK.
What scanner you got, & can you suggest where to get one?
Dealers want £120+ for diagnostic

Had a mobile diagnostics guy out. He couldn't read the ECU.
Seems to think there may be a fault with the ECU or immobiliser.
I'll check all the sensors as suggested & if no joy bite the bullet & send it to dealer.

Doesn't work on the 98-99 Wranglers but give this a go. Within five seconds turn the ignition on-off-on-off-on. On is when the cluster starts to light up. Off is one click back so the lights go out. Leave the key in the on position the third time and watch the odometer display. If it works you will see the trouble codes flash up there and 55 means end of codes.

Go to the Data Link Connector (where the scanner plugs in) with a digital multimeter and check the voltage between pin 3 and ground and between pin 11 and ground. Eac one should show 2.5 volts.

Oh, and in case you haven't already, try disconnecting the battery for a minute then trying again, sometimes the driver's door module can throw a wobbly and bugger up the rest of the Jeep's data bus.

Checked the voltages as suggested 3=2.35V, 4=0, 5=0, 6=0(1.18V with igntion on), 7=0, 11=2.35V, 16=12.15V.

Is that what you would expect if the ECU is good?

Can the ECU be replaced with a second hand one without any other reprogramming or components being changed?
Can get a used ECU for £70.

Strange things happening now. Alarm decided to go off this morning. Haven't even looked at anything since Sunday.
Couldn't stop it. Neither of the key fobs would unlock doors or cancel alarm.
Getting more frustrated now.

Battery had gone flat which would explain why the alarm went off & the doors wouldn't unlock.
Need to try & trace drain on battery now.
Maybe it will be easier to find something if there is a current flowing.

Where can I find the body control module? have looked in the drivers footwell as suggested, how big is the module & what does it look like? can only see relays & fuses.
Is the power control module a different thing altogether? is this in the passenger footwell?
Have bought another Grand Orvis cheep I can rob parts from now. Theres a few other bits I want too. Then I'll break it.

Nope, it's behind the panel on the bottom of the dash in front of your right knee. It has 4 huge multi plugs in it.

IT'S ALIVE !!!!

Was ready to give in.
Basil Fawlty & a big branch sprang to mind!
Swapped ECU, immobiliser module, door module, alarm module, had lots of tests done, still couldn't read ECU.
Two things left to try, crank & cam sensor.
Unplugged crank sensor as Mike suggested & gauges came back. Put sensor on off of donor & away it went.

Lesson learned:- always try the easy things first as people suggest even if it doesn't seem logical.
