Towing Relay (wj Grand)
« on: July 31, 2009, 12:06:40 AM »

Hi,

I have a tow bar on my 2002 WJ Grand and I have tracked down the wiring as the indicators didn't work when it was all plugged in and found that the relay is missing that sits behind the rear panel on the left.

Does anyone know what sort or relay this is and where to get 1.

Edit its a mopar tow bar with a black and white plug

Cheers

If it's the relay that comes in the Mopar towing electrics kit, I think you will have to get a complte new wiring kit, as I don't recall being able to get individual spares for them. You could try a few dealerships, theparts departments often have tow kits that have a bit missing (usually the socket) for this reason.

Hi Mike,

I will have a call round and see if any of them have a spare, but it must be a standard relay of some sort but I just don't know what sort as I have never seen one.

Has anyone got a picture of what one looks like ???

I think it's a special for the job. How many pins does it have?

Here is a picture of the plugs I have, I know where the white plug goes and that worked the lights and the brakes.

Its the other 2 plugs the one on the left is for a  3 pin relay ? I would have thought to work the indicators, because when we plugged in the harness to the indicators they did not flash on the back as for the other plug at the top I have no idea what that is for?

From what I recall, there should be a 3 pin relay and a control box fitted. These are required to stop the trailer wiring messing with the current detection that triggers the bulb failure warnings on the information panel.

A new wiring kit is about £150, or tear it all out and fit new electrics.

On my witter listing for 1999-2005 grand cherokee is that a WJ  there is no bulb modual listed only a std bleaper but for some reason they supply the 7 pin socket with 5mtrs of cable possibly because it needs to be wired to the front of the vehicle ,if the vehicle has bulb failure as std it will need a 7 way bypass relay these cost around £25 and this will protect the system ,there is not a plugin kit for this year of vehicle unless JEEP do one
