2.5 td to a 2.5 petrol
« on: July 31, 2009, 06:17:29 PM »

Hi could anyone tell me is it possible to change a 2.5td to a 2.5 petrol I have both vehicles but one has a rotten body , what I want to do is put the petrol engine into the diesel body, If it is possible what would i have to change over? ie ecu /tank pump / would the diesel gearbox fit the 2.5 or is the spigot shaft different .

why do you want to put the petrol lump in the oil burners body? there is a good bit of work in going from oil burner to the petrol i would think. you cant mate up the gearbox from one to the other i dont think. not sure if the engine harness will just plug in. the 2.5 petrol is pretty underpowered too.

If you break 'em both up for spares you'll get enough money to buy a nice facelifted 4.0. :003:

Quite a lot of work for no real benefit. I am sure it could be done, especially as you have both vehicles side by side but it will throw up lots of unexpected problems. The gearboxes are different so may need swapping with the engines, probably engine bay looms and ecu, propshafts and the real bugger will be the axle gearing. As the diesel has 3.73 axle ratios and the petrol has 4.10, putting the low power/torque petrol behind the diesel axles will reduce the mediocre performance to a pitiful level. Ideally you would want to swap the axles as well which isn't a huge task but it is something to add to the list.

Still interested?

IF it were me I would probably break the petrol and sell it's 4.10 ratio axles to an off-roader that has fitted bigger tyres then use the money towards repairing/replacing the diesel engine. By all accounts, if the diesel is fixed properly and has a well maintained cooling system it is actually a good engine (IF IT IS FIXED PROPERLY!)

Good luck.

breaking both would give a better return  i think the swap could be done but would not be that simple
and you would end up with a disapointing motor

2 reasons for this I guess. First is the economy, few people are parting with cash especially for whimsical things like off-road toy bits and pieces. Second, is that the market is somewhat saturated as these vehicles are now 10-15 years old so everyone and his uncle has one listed on eBay as breaking for spares. This week I just bought a facelift drivers side mirror for £5 +P&P. 18 months ago the very same item would have easily sold for £25-30 +P&P.

About the most valuable bits you have are the axles from the 2.5ltr petrol and even the rear one of those might not be very desirable depending on which axle it is.

Advertise individual parts at reasonable prices - stuff is selling, but slowly as that many are doing it - so you need to compete.

I think my prices are reasonable but have not been asked for much what do people want, what would a fair price be for say a towbar or a headlight switch?.......... thanks for all the repyies but as from this week all 4 jeeps that I have will be going to the crusher

dont want to put a downer on the situation but i paid £200 for a complete 2.5 petrol just for the axles. kept the axles and tried to sell the rest but with no real joy so what's left is off to the scrap man.

I did actually ask you, via ebay a while ago, for a price for clutch hydraulics and had to decline your item as I had bought scrap jeeps for only double what you were asking for the item (but I didn't have hydraulics for a mk1 - only a mk2 :010:)- I bought it elsewhere for a quarter of your price.

It is very competive and you need to put time and effort it selling stuff - and then get bugger all for - good if you need to buy something though.

Towbar should get you £40 with tow ball, £30/35 without

Headlight switch say £15

the bad thing about breaking somthing up is you are playing a waiting game you cant make good mony from a part by just ebaying everything off you have to set to high a reserve or risk selling for 99p the market xjs is awash
if you had a big shed or field to park them in untuoched and wait five or six years you would make a bundle but at the mo its deffo a buyers market
i have a 2.5 yj to break but there aint much worth enything on it no one wants a 2.5
