ZJ Viscous coupler!!
« on: July 08, 2009, 10:12:35 AM »

Hi guys, i have a 1997 grand cherokee limited 4.0 petrol, after a run of say 10 miles i get hard juddering when parking up and it will not pull away under its own steam with foot off the brake from stanstill, just been serviced brakes are fine, so i routed around and have come to the coclusion its the VC.
Jeep want £733 just to supply it!! Ebay jeep guy wants £400 but have found a place in the US for £280 brand new crown automotive unit....is this about the lowest i can expect to pay??

if the price fits the pocket and its tested i dont see a problem as long as there is somkind of replacement waranty obviously you cant expect much of a waranty as its going to be second hand parts but a good trading experiance is good for you and good for them too  [word of mouth]

Gonna import a new VC but in meantime can it be driven normally with front prop removed? i know i will lose offroad ability but its just for work and needs to stay on the road... its a 249 case.. some guy i spoke to today is an ex chrysler technician and basically told me that it would be fine..... though i got the feeling he worked for them about 100 years ago lol... anyone done this before?

Yup.  Drove around in my 1997 ZG for months like that.

Make sure your handbrake works ok because you'll lose the Park functionality on the transmission.

If you're not doing the work yourself, it would be so much cheaper to have either a NP231 or 242 case swapped in off a Cherokee. imo at least.

np242 should be a straight swop, as long it is from the same year, male slip yoke, or female yoke :icon_winkle:

Sounds perfect! How far are you from Kidderminster?... are there any mods to be taken into account to put the 242 on mine?

Thanks daggie, so as long as the input shafts are same it will go straight on, then all i need to do is swop over the connectors behind the radio and get a different console plate for the new functions

Consol plate could be a problem, only zjs in the usa had 242s
no other stuff is needed, the switches on the new box must have the same shape electrical plugs :icon_winkle:
