XJ brake conversion.
« on: August 24, 2005, 07:07:16 PM »

Was parrusing one of the other club sites and saw an XJ that had had ZJ rear disks fitted.

Anyone seen a conversion like this and know how big a job it would be??

from what I have seen it doesnt look that hard, you need the backplate off the ZJ axle for the handbrake shoes, disks, calipers, caliper hangers etc.
There is a site out there listing the mod, will look in my favs

Yee ask I'll deliver.  :D

Heres mine for a ZJ to TJ Dana35 conversion

Heres a ZJ to TJ Dana44 conversion

Heres a ZJ to XJ Dana44 conversion.

Ive had the new discs on the rear of my TJ for two weeks. Ive noticed a difference in braking right off the bat. Im waiting for a new Proportioning valve for a 96ZJ to compensate for the rear to apply more fluid to the rear. Your brakes will fill a bit less stiff because you are more or less pushing less pressure to move the brakes. In order to get more pressure you will need a stronger Master Cylinder, however one mod at a time for my wallet.  :D

Remember that if you use ZJ rear discs you will still lose your parking brake if it gets full of mud, as it is housed in a small drum cast into the disc.

My thoughts exactly..... Tis always a wakeup on the way home to lock the front wheels at the first junction...... (to dry them off of course)

But these brake conversions seem to cost £££££.... maybe those in the know can do them cheaper.... but I am only just onto changing hubs.... and that took 2 coal chisels....!

My Dana35 c-clip style change over was pretty cheap and really easy.

I paid US 270 for Junkyard parts and new rear pads.

Heck the swap was even easier on the wallet. Just cracked up the diff pulled the c-clips and axles and bolted everything back on.

Yes the E-brake pads are a bit smaller than the Drums. I'm looking at installing line locks so basically I press down the brake and push a button to hold my brakes. I like to call it a backup measure. I have a tendancy to use my E-brake and hand throttle a lot climbing and running rocky switch backs.

As well a line lock does use battery power, but its more or less a wheeling backup than a parking backup.

I haven't really experienced any mud yet with my rear discs, but the front has survived every bit of mud so there shouldn't be a reason that the rear shouldn't.

Just make sure if you swap out your rears you get the e-brake cable unless the e-brake cable connection is the same for a XJ as a ZJ on the TJ's its different.
