9500 or 12000lb Winch

Looking at winches at the moment and can't decide whether to go 9500lb or 12000lb pull for a winch, leaning towards the 9500lb as it is cheaper / smaller / lighter and I am not sure if I would ever need 12000lb pull for getting the TJ unstuck.  So was hoping people would sound off with their opinions.

personly i wouldnt stress on size, just get the best quality you can, and stay clear of the cheap chinese crap on flebay, seen 3 die on first pull now

if your pulling out of mud then the vehicle "dead load" is increased considerably before the towed vehicle starts to aid.
 buy a well known brand mainly for reliability when the winch is working hard

Got a second hand Ramsey winch,taken off a recovery truck,rated at 9000 lbs,and although well used,it will have a brand new warn winch cable,and im looking for £180 with the new cable if interested,or £150 with current cable if interested.Should be better than a cheap 9.5 or 12000 lb cheapie.Ive seen a few of those extreme 12000lb winches already as spares or repair,and not too old either

Was looking at the T-Max Outback 9500 12v Winch With Radio Control.  Specs shown below, been doing some searching and they don't get too bad a write up, as I cannot really justify the cost of a Warn.  Also looked into spares and they are fairly easy to come by.  Also looked at the Warn for comparisons and they get the love hate ratings as well and seem to be as problematic as any other winch.

warn seems to be the only winch to live up to their specs fully
husky,supper winch, t-max, champion all follow very close behind

id go with an 8k winch of good brand before 9or12k of lesser

Now been looking at the goldfish in the aquarium and can't say it has helped other than making me want a leak.  I have looked at the Goldfish on the Goodwinch site, the only reason for the interest in the TMax is that for the same price it comes equiped with the wireless remote.  But I have not made any hard and fast decisions as of yet.  Probably leaning towards 9000ish pounds of pull as a size but other than that note decided yet.

a wireless remote kit is only 25 quid m8, don't choose a winch just on that feature

Superwinch Goldfish range seems popular. Would sway towards them, as i have had very good service from David Boywers in the past. And run the 5.6hp bowmotor on an 8274

I cant say a bad thing about the 2 "Come-ups 9000's" i have used regulary. At Cheapfest a single line pull on a stuffed Disco and a TJ from the Blue Subs bottomless pit is proof of their worth (Asylums front winch)

I have only seen gaskets between mating parts of Warn winches. So a strip down and sealant apllied to surfaces is worth considering. Theres a lot to said for servicing you winch regular. They still fill with crud over time and need a good strip down and clean now and then.

9000lb winch with a snatch block will move most things. Generally the 12000 models are identical but slower due to gearing to suit loads.

Oh! Whatever you do, stay away from "Brake in drum" models. As they are high maintenance, and synthetic ropes are a "NO,NO" as the drum heats up. Most 8000lbs winches are this style as it can keep the size more compact.

Not sure with the wireless remotes? Theres enough electrickery to deal with as it is :003:

superwinch all the way for me. both me and manda have had the ep9's for a while now and no probs at all. they have had some stick too. cheap winches are just that. some are ok but some are super shit...

Asylums 'Come up winches are UK built by guys that used to work for Warn and they run allbright solenods that guys who hot-rod their 8274s swear by! and they were selling for £399 at Jeepy event at Tong last month!!!

However the 8274 is the small block chevy of the winch world... but they ain't cheap even 2nd hand... however you can modify and repair till the cows come home and the parts are there.....

Hydraulic..... slow and unburstable.... if you saw me hauling guys out the goop on tickover you'll appreciate the reliability...
Had it on the front for 8 years never a prob...... However its going on the back soon and an 8274 is waiting in the wings for front duty so I guess that says it all.

to me it would help to work out whats going to be on the end most, if it was bubba I would go for the 9000 but if gregmo gets stuck you would deffo need the 12000.......

Often 12000 winches are just 9500 ones with different gears, so much slower... as discussed snatch block if heavy pull, this will also help keep the line straight and should wind back on the drum better....

Goodwinches (David Bower) are excellent, visited him earlier in the year... would say they are better than T max's...



PS He didn't have a good word to say about LR's... but loves Toyota's and Jeeps  :icon_super:

Yep fitted a Goodwinch (very helpful people) TDS9.5C a couple of weeks back, installation under Winch bumper part1 and 2.
