Wheel Shake
« on: December 31, 2009, 05:28:29 PM »

I gottan XJ 4.0 2000 .

Passenger side wheel wobbles at certain speeds, 55 to 60, then ok till about 75.

Sometimes will wobble slightly at lower speeds.  Replaced some bits including steering damper , checked wheel balance and wheel straightness, cannot seem to find anything obviously knackered,

Any Ideas on a common fault on these models?

Oh yeah, and A Happy New Year to you all

there is no listed problem for wheel issues at these speeds.

55 to 60 is normal for an unbalanced wheel to vibrate and this surprisingly is typical for a normal wheel acros varies vehicles.

what i would check is the track rod end (ball joint) at the hub and the clamps to the adjuster on the steering tie and tracking adjuster

Gregmo.. all standard at moment on the jeep. Trying to get everything working correctly before altering .

Dave . tyres are all ok , checked and balance.. tracking is spot on apparently.
I have a new symptom for you all, When the jeep is in full time 4 wheel drive and I turn sharp right.. nearly full lock the left wheel seems to jam and lock up but not completely.
It will jam then turn then jam and so on , it give the effect of kangaroo petrol until I put it straight line again .. in 2 wheel it does not do this.
Could there be a driveshaft prob? or lack of oil, or UJ ?  stabbing in the dark here. The jeep does not do this when on sharp turn left.. so mini roundabouts are a pain sometimes.
It does not happen all the time tho, somedays it behaves great, although the wheel wobble is always there.

have a look at the uj's at the front wheel hubs. when worn and with excessive play they will move and lock until forced free again. with no drive to the front wheels they will rotate with no issue. Had the same problems with mine. greasable uj's from lighthouse are around £15. plenty of threads on the site on how to swap them. have you jacked the wheel off the ground and tried to wobble the wheel holding it at 12 and 6 oclock positions then tried again after rotating it 90 degrees ? any movement will indicate play in the hub bearing

Hi Dave.
jacked car up just an hour ago to check all joints, all seems well , no free play in anything with the exception of top antiroll bar bush.. shagged!
Will get new one for that .  No play in wheel at all.
Did you have a wheel wobble with the UJ joints gone?  If the one on the passenger side is locking this may cause a wobble ?  ( thinking aloud).

Just did an oil and filter change on engine and also checked and topped up oil in box and transfer case, also both axles, greased alll nipples I could find ( my missus objected at this point  :icon_twisted:)
So it seems your suggestion will be the next move.

Disconnect one end of the steering damper and fully extend and compress it. You should get plenty of resistance in both directions for the full travel. If not, bin it.

Hi Mike.
Steering damper is brand new.
So no probs there. I did think it may be the steering .. but driverside has no shake at all.
I was hoping someone else had had this prob and could point me straight to the prob to save me changing everything a bit at a time ..starting with the cheapest :icon_biggrin:

Well I will cure it eventually . Something has to be either bent, broken, worn, incorrectly fitted or siezed.. Matter of trial by pennies now.

Thanks for all the help so far.. will let you all know as I go along.

Just a thought, check your damper, had a new one on the TJ this year & almost immediately it started leaking but thought it had to be something else. Replaced by Lighthouse with no issues & almost un-heard of but it can happen  :icon_winkle:

Hi how do you know which side is wobbling .Are you getting uneven tyre wear on one side . If not it could be wear in the steering box

Hi Neilhull
I can feel it distinctly when turning right hand corners. the wheel will actually lock in 4 wheel mode at slow speed, and the jeep pulls slightly to the left when letting go of the steering wheel.
No uneven wear on tyres as tracking is spot on and camber is correct .. I have had this checked.
The steering damper is fine.
The only thing that I can see that is obvious are the top bushes on the torsion bar/antiroll bar.
the wheel wobble will happen as slow speeds also ..starts at about 5 mile an hour then goes away through 25 to 30 then comes back in again at 55 to 60.
I have driven the jeep tonight and really loistened to it and there is a slight grinding noise from that side of the car also , Bearings are ok , checked em today, I think dave may be right about the ujs, but not excessive play but siezing.

When I bought the jeep 8 months ago the lubrication on everything was non existent. I put 3.5 ltrs of oil in the engine and 3/4 ltr oil in the auto box.
Done 2 oil changes on the engine and all is sweet now. So I think it is purely down to lack of lurvin the jeep. whoever owned it just drove it nothing else.

The body and interior are superb tho for the year .

One thing not mentioned is that XJs are well known for sticking brake callipers, but I don't think you'll get the symptoms you've described though. :017: It was just a thought! :icon_biggrin:

had the same symtoms on my last XJ, felt loose on the drivers side, turned out to be the passenger side track rod end (steering box drag link). You could only see the play by jacking up the front end and checking it at various degrees of right hand lock, took a while to find that one, I changed the axle knuckle joints, steering damper too before spotting it. Down side is they are about £90 new due to being the whole drag link, other side ball joint is £15

Hi SCRW

I have not checked that part as thorough as you describe, will be my next job methnks.

The Ujs are causing the other prob with low speed wobble and juddering tho.. Half dismantled today and the passenger side is really stiff.

If not too cold tomorrow will do it then .
Thanks
