Son of a....fault code p0700 on my 03 WJ

Just took my WJ out through the snow (watching the 2wds slipping and sliding and of course feeling very sorry for them as they didnt get a Jeep before the snow and ice hit, anyway, i digress....).  Turned on the ignition and my MIL stayed illuminated and has turned up a new fault code.  After doing the on/off trick I pulled out p0700.  From wjjeeps it says:

P0700 (M) - Check Transmission DTC's - This code indicates that the EATX (Transmission controller) has an active fault and has illuminated the MIL via a BUS message. The specific fault must be acquired from the EATX via a DRBIII tool. (Input or Output Speed Sensor failures often cause this code and are a common failure part on WJ Grand Cherokees).


Anyone else ever had this on their WJ and if so did you replace the speed sensors and it fixed the problem, or did it turn out to be a different fault?  Can anyone recommend some software or a tool that can read the transmission controller codes without me having to pay uber money to the dealer?

Had problems as you know last year January with my gearbox.  Engine management light on and gearbox in limp home mode.  This was intermittant but very annoying and worrying.

below some clues from Mike Pavelin at the time and the link to the full thread. Maybe there are some answers there.

702 is a transmission related code and the fact that it is in limp mode confirms that the transmission control module thinks there is a fault. There is no way of interrogating the transmission controller without either a dealer's DRBIII scan tool or a very advanced aftermarket scanner with specific Jeep software. There were some issues with communication between the Mercedes transmission control and Jeep powertrain control modules which can make communication difficult. I would suggest taking it to a Jeep dealer and get them to run a proper diagnostic. They will have the technical information and any relevant software to hand. It might just need a software update.

For me it was just a software upgrade for £32 and thought the service was second to none.
