XJ wet brakes

My brake pedal feels crap after i've been through water, is this normal on an XJ or have I got dodgy pads?

This is surprisingly common and I don't know how Jeep got away with it? The rear drum brakes get wet and the change in the overall vehicle braking can be quite scary (a few brown trouser moments when towing an empty trailer on the motorway in monsoon conditions  :icon_eek: )

Not a lot you can do about it other than learn to anticipate it and make sure the little rubber plugs are in the backing plate where the adjuster window slot is. On the other hand, you can do what I did and find a set of disk brakes from a ZJ or KJ and throw the drum brakes away.

Brakes affected by water. If you have driven through deep water your brakes may be less effective. Test them at the first safe opportunity by pushing gently on the brake pedal to make sure that they work. If they are not fully effective, gently apply light pressure while driving slowly. This will help to dry them out.
