So about 6 weeks ago I find a pool of coolant under my Jeep.  Check the level and its below the "Add" indicator.   Topped it up to "Full"

Had a check on Sunday and its about half an inch off "Add".  No further pools of coolant so not sure where its gone.

Any ideas whats going on?  A leak would explain the coolant loss but there was one big pool then nothing but its still gone.

check the waterpump, mine was leaking but the fan sprays the water back over the engine so no obvious pools under it

Thanks for the replies chaps.

Would the loss of coolant indicate anything more serious?  I'm happy if its just a leak somewhere I'll find it.  My concern is that if I want to start doing things like LPG conversion and maybe a bit of a lift.  I don't want to fork out a couple of grand and the engine decides to let go.

I-6's don't tend to blow head gaskets, but at worst a second hand motor is cheap, no one seems to want them.
The one in my WJ is on 175k miles & getting a bit tappety on cold mornings, just going to run it till it dies and get a replacement to swap out, just not worth the £ to fix it

Thanks scrw, I guess only time will tell.  My XJ has only done 55K. I found the previous owners posts on the forum and he also said he found a puddle underneath the Jeep and that post was in 08.  No mention of rad change or anything like that since.

You sure its coolant and not condensation from the A/C?

Yes its coolant.  It tastes a bit sweet and has that shiney oily film to it on the floor (rather than dull water shine if you know what I mean)

I topped up the coolant only a month ago/200 miles ago and its nearly at the "add" level again.

My last XJ would leave big puddles of water from the A/C but that was behind one of the rear wheels (I remember the "oh dear, that doesn't look right" moment well!)

My KJ/Liberty had similar signs, always having to add a little coolant......now the only time i had a pool of coolant under her was when i had parked on a slight slope with rear end uphill, causing the coolant in a cool exhaust pipe to travel down said exhaust pipe and escape from the small hole in the front of the first exhaust box......none of my so called exxxperrrtssssss (spanners) believed me, well it cost me £3.5k :010: to have it sorted, the head was fuqed, a small crack in the exhaust chamber was found, so it was tits up for my wallet, new head £1200, at least that came with valves fitted + labour/bits/bolts/gasket, and while it was apart new timing belt (again, only had one put on 10k miles ago) and a fan belt.

Totally skint now :010:.

As you look at the front of the Jeep i`m pretty sure its come from the bottom left hand corner. I think its some sort of pressure thing and as the coolant goes round the system the heat or whatever in the coolant seals it off. It done that once while I had the thing and never again. I checked the level religiously for weeks and nothing.

By the way, have you got the locking wheel nut tool mate?

This was the case for me also changing the waterpump fixed it

Hi my 2.5 td likes to run an inch below the full mark and it never moves, if I top it up it blows it off. Is your heater working, are the pipes to the heate hot? if not it may be an air lock thats causing it?
Mind I am new to jeeps so I my knowledge is Ltd.
cheers greg
