IMHO it doesn't matter what type of kit you use, strops, chain or rope just pick whatever suites your driving style. 2 things that you should look for are to make sure its certificated and at least rated to twice the weight of the vehicle as a minimum.
strops are the cheapest and the most forgiving when it comes to new users, and whatever you use you will need at least one strop to use as a tree saver.
chains are good in the right hands, personally i wouldn't suggest them for a novice but they do last forever
ropes (kinetic) are an accident waiting to happen, as the name suggests they store energy as the tow car starts the tow then dumps it all on the recovery point in one big lump, with a good chance of ripping off anything other than the best recovery points, leave these for the lighter froaders.
so as a starter kit get 1x6mt strop, 1x2mt strop 2 or 3 shackles and a good pair of gloves
