Brakeing problem on Jeep ZJ
« on: May 14, 2010, 01:05:32 PM »

when you brake occasionally the abs will kick in causing the pedal to vibrate, as abs does, this isn't every time you brake, it is mainly when you press a little harder on the pedal, has anyone got any idea's

My xj cherokee just started doing the samer thing recently , in my case the brakes work ok , but there is this vibration on the pedal as the car comes almost to a halt....

My Polish mechanic friend tells me its likely to be a dirty or faulty sensor on the abs being fooled into thinking the wheels are locking , and therefore operating the abs.....

I guess if cleaning it does not work you have to replace it......

As already said, it is likely to be a dirty sensor. If it was a faulty sensor the ABS self diagnostics should spot it at start up and put on the ABS warning lamp continually. The sensor faces are likely to be furred up with steel debris, I think they are mildly magnetic. We did have a member on here or difflock who had similar problems after doing some welding on his car and thought he had somehow blown a sensor electrically but found he had actually clogged the sensor nearest the repair with grinder filings.
