Dana 30 chipped ring gear replacement
« on: August 31, 2010, 11:30:28 PM »

I pulled the cover on my dana 30 tonight to replace the oil and rather worryingly noticed two teeth weren't all there.
I found a bit of tooth in the bottom of the casing and after a bit of digging around found the other bit hiding in the back of the casing so at least they cant cause any more damage.
The question is can i get away with just replacing the ring gear with a new one or will it all need shimming up in which case it would obviously be better to rebuild the entire thing.
The pinion has no marks on it and neither has the rest of the ring gear which is probably more due to luck than anything else :icon_rolleyes:.

Ring and pinion are manufactured as matched pairs, it is very bad practice to replace one and not the other and is likely to howl it's tits off if you do. It needs doing properly first time.

Living proof that the D30 just aint strong enough for the job :011:

If it's narrow track CJ with a common ratio (like 4.09) you'll get another axle mucho cheaper than new parts.

Be a pain and pull the cover before doing the deal :greggmo:

Thought that might be the case :010:

It is a 4.27s ratio of a 1974 narrow track cj so if anyones got one i can buy or even swap you for a 3.31 or 2.73 ratio diff as i have plenty of those for some reason :icon_sad:

Errrrrrr...........I have one from a '74 CJ6 c/w drum brakes but I'm gonna sit on it as I have the matching D44 rear with the same 4.27 ratio.

Having said that the CJ6 was run off road as a runabout for game shooting for years and years

May be worse that yours anyway

Most likely to be 4.27 as this seems to be the default ratio for '72 to '75 CJs

So the CJ5 ones probably right but the $64,000 question is wether the CWP is in good nick.
