An interesting little problem popped up today
« on: January 16, 2011, 07:19:54 PM »

So, I unlocked my door and ping, whatever is attached to the outside door handle inside the door came off, and I am unable to open the door from outside.

I envisaged it would be a job of getting the door card off to have a look at what had come off/ broken, unfortunately as I found, that's not the way to access the parts,

So can anyone tell me if you can get the door handle/ opener off externally There are 2 little rubber grommets and I wonder if they hold the key to getting it out ?

Oh, its a '98 Wrangler Tj by the weigh...

External door handle can only be removed by taking the door card off & accessing from the inside; there held on by 2 wedges.
I'm guessing you've been able to open the door from the inside so the problem lies with the handle or lock; if so the rods may've popped off the back of the handle.
Not sure what you mean by grommets (if they are on the Handle cup then they're just the bump stops for the handle when it springs closed).
How far have you got stripping it down; I can list the procedure out of the service manual if that helps.

Thanks, subsequently I have found a write up of the process on an american site:
http://www.wranglerforum.com/f5/how-to-replace-exterior-door-handle-full-steel-doors-45442.html

I will try again, presuming of coarse, it stops raining

If I get any problems, I'll post them back here, it looks quite fiddly

Anytime ;-)
Yeah I'm pretty slick at changing door handles out; about to do it for the 3rd time;
 The original set didn't like being pressure washed & all the paint fell off.
 The second set supplied by Lighthouse were made of monkey metal & finished in poster paint so they've lasted 2 years & the one has more rust on the handle than paint.
