75 CJ Power Steering Box
« on: December 14, 2010, 09:52:21 AM »

Can anyone tell me if a 96 - 98 Cheerokee steering box will fit into the 75 CJ6, I'm wanting to convert manual to power and I have been told/advised that ithe Cherokee one will but need to make sure before I buy, my steering column has already been modified and is believed to be an early Cherokee one so the splines should mate up, any info would be appreciated.

They aren't too expensive to buy second hand - I would be tempted to get hold of one and try. As for actual answers, no, I haven't a clue  :icon_redface:

I only remember reading this......... so not necessarily correct..........

but the Cherry steering boxes are the same as the YJ TJ boxes but apart from being cheaper and more of them they attach with 3 bolts not 4, this doesn't seem to be a prob tho unless you go large in which case any steering box will need to be braced from the other chassis rail.

You could search in 'Pirate 4x4' in the US of A....... Just google 'XJ box in a CJ' or similar, I am sure some'at will come up.......

The manual steering boxes have different splines on the input shaft so your steering shaft wont fit without modification.
The Cherokee power steering boxes do fit to the manual bracket but the bracket is a bit weak, you are better off fabricating one if you are taking it off road/have big tyres on as mine snapped its fixing lugs off and left me with no steering luckily not on the motorway :003:

So that answers my question, it will work with a little help

Yeah I figured on the splines but I believe my steering column is out of a Cherokee anyway as it is not a Factory CJ one, making a bracket is no probs either, the main issue was he box itself, I will now go and lift one from a Cherokee and will prob get the lower shaft too so if needed I can mod mine column with the right splines.

Will keep you posted, not sure if it will be before Christmas though

Additionally there will be issues with the pitman arm, i have a proper one for a cj with power steering that is flat and i believe the Cherokees pitman arm has a crank in it plus the cjs ball joint might not fit either
AND the cjs have a cut out in the chassis front cross member (look at the passenger side) to make room for the power steering hose.

In summary the box fits a treat with no problems straight to the bracket, but anything that attaches to it dosent fit in any shape or form without modification :icon_rolleyes:
