XJ 2.5 TD - Squealing and 'fluid loss'
« on: January 04, 2011, 04:34:48 PM »

Hi guys,

I noticed the other day I had some squealing from under the bonnet. I pulled over to take a look and found that just behind and below the left of the drive belt, there's some fluid of some sort flying directly up and out onto the belt and surrounding parts.

I've got a couple of pics. On this one I've pointed out where the fluid's coming from:

And here is a wider shot showing where in the engine bay I'm looking:

Can anyone tell me what is ejecting the fluid and what the fluid is?

I have had a (very) slow leak of coolant recently. So putting 2 & 2 together, I figure it could be coolant coming out onto the drive belt which is causing the belt to squeal like it does. But then, I could be very wrong....

Any advice?

Thanks!

Looks like the water pump, which would explain the coolant loss to.

Yeah, that looks like the culprit. If that's what it is, then hopefully it'll be all 3 problems solved at once!

Thanks.

Its all adding up, the squealing will be the pump bearing failing  :icon_winkle:

and there are 2 impeller sizes fitted to them - and age isn't always the determining factor :jpshakehead:

An update for those interested - had the water pump changed last week. It was knackered, loads of play in it and not turning too well. The drive belt had to be changed as well, since the coolant spitting on the belt hadn't done it much good (and it wasn't far off needing replacing anyway).
