When to use 4 wheel drive (Cherokee 2.5TD)
« on: January 23, 2011, 08:02:29 PM »

Not being too sure what the settings on the transfer box where I looked in the forums. Where to my surprise it seems there are 2 types one with a full time 4 wheel drive you can use all the time with a negligible mpg drop and one like mine with 2H/4H (part time) and 4L. Apparently the one I've got should never be used for any length of time on paved roads. So does this mean when driving around in snow then reach a stretch of road that's clear I've got to keep swapping in and out of 4 wheel drive.
Whats the history of this was the one I haven't got a more expensive option when new or is it model specific.
 Any info much appreciated. :icon_biggrin:

Read the sticker on your sunvisor - it tells you what to do :icon_winkle:

And yes - you can't use 4wd on firm tarmac - but you can switch between 2wd & 4wd at road speeds

diesel 4wd is for use on loose or slippery surfaces where the wheels can actively slip. if used on tarmac then the transmission will fail due to the uneven torque loading applied by the wheels back through the driveline.

2wd round corners then 4wd on straight bits of road

99.9% of 4.0 petrol cherokees have the Full time 4WD transfer case whing means you can leave it in 4WD on any surface including dry tarmac.

The 2.5 diesel you have are all fitted with the part time only tranfer case

You'll get used to pulling the lever into 4 wheel drive, none of this poncey turn a little plastic knob and hope it don't come off, even that tit Clarkson said that what ya's need.

Keep ya speed under 50 for high ratio. and under 5 mph for low ratio, and yup you do need to press the clutch in.

Met one of me old mates the other month, he was in middle of a pig field, and it was effing muddy......ha ha you'l get stuck he says....he ate his words. :icon_biggrin:..missus went light when i got home tho', where the hell have yoo been with that? yoo aint treading that shite in my house. :098:
