Grand Cherokee no crank, what to do?
« on: January 27, 2011, 06:10:22 PM »

Hello all,

Funny how car problems bring everyone together online :) Anyway, my 1996 Grand Cherokee wont crank. It never failed to start before i stupidly cut the alarm siren box to stop an eviction from my home! The alarm was mental, nothing would stop it (even driving). So i cut it and the car started up as normal. The next day i had total silence upon turning the key. Put the box and wires back on (with the siren speaker removed) and it wouldnt start, no crank again. Took the battery off, cleaned both connections, and put back on, wouldnt start, 10 mind later whilst testing the voltage whilst turning key, it randomly started and drove fine. Switched off, switched on, all fine.

Next day, silence upon turning the key. Took battery off and charged it, load tested it put it back, no joy. And its now been dead with a random start for about 4 days now.

Power to all electrics seems fine, guages work when ignition is on, flicked the ignition to reveal error codes of 12 and 55, battery has been removed and replaced, and end of error codes. So no hope there.

Whats the next steps to test? My keyfob turns the red light off as normal still, so im thinking its not immobiliser related, but perhaps it is. I heard it runs from the same fuse as the aircon, where would i find this fuse?

Any other questions you might have to furthur assess the situation, i will reply to as quick as possible, as i really need the Jeep back :(

ZJ sudden immobiliser death strikes again? I'm starting to think they're a ticking time-bomb.

its never a good idea to just remove things by cutting them off and hoping for the best sadly.

Agreed, i wont do it again! But surely you dont just scrap Jeeps when this happens, there must be a solution? What areas to check and what to look for?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Our very own Mr Cabbage had major problems with the immobiliser. Seems to be more and more
of a problem on ZJs as time passed. Of course putting shears to wire doesn't help either....

Cutting the wires on a ZG immobiliser is about as sensible as marrying Katie Price and ticking no publicity on the Hello Mag disclaimer...

Get the body control module...drivers footwell and or door control module...inside passenger door checked out..
