Landrover MTF-94 in AX-5 / AX-15 Gearboxes??
« on: February 15, 2011, 01:27:45 PM »

I have been trying to find a GL3 oil for my Dad's AX-5 gearbox and I've got more chance of buying tartan paint.

I re-read the lubrication article and Warthog mentioned using Landrover MTF-94 in these gearboxes and he seems to know enough about oils for me to give it a go. I could mail order some Amsoil or Redline but their pretty expensive and my Dad has no real interest in cars, it's just a workhorse that needs to be reliable and keep going as long as possible - If I say I've bought some fancy mail order only oil for his gearbox I'll get a very strange look and have to stump up the bill myself.

Anyway, I can get this MTF locally, it's not too expensive - has Asylum used it in his Jeeps? Anyone else? any reason not to try it?

I'm wary of the oils that say they are compatible with GL3/4/5 but have found the following:

EP90w GL4 gear oil, specifically states that it is suitable for use when the vehicle manufacturer specifies against GL5.
MTF-94 (non-LR branded) - suitable for use in many vehicles including Honda, Landrover, Rover, MG, BMW Mini.

Any comments? The EP90w GL4 is cheap enough that I could try it and change it out if it negatively affects gear changes.

Dealer fill is now 10W-30 motor oil.

Check his links to the Jeep engineer Q&A in which one of them confirms this.

That Millers might be the classic gear oil i tried before i filled with Redline MTL. It was crap, changing actually got worse.

I went with EP90w GL4 that I found at Eurocarparts for 3.49 a litre. It was so cheap compared with the alternatives that I thought it was worth a go. Dad reports that it goes in reverse better now (it had been a bit of a pig on random, frequent occasions). I'll report back if there are any problems but unless it stops going forwards and back my Dad probably won't notice.

Eurocarparts also do a Manual Transmission Fluid (MTF) and another option I found was Castrol Syntrax synthetic gear oil but that was about £12/litre.
