4.0l Cherokee P reg - coolant probs, help needed!
« on: March 25, 2011, 11:36:55 PM »

I really could do with some sound help/advise for my 4.0l - getting fairly narked off with the garage!

P reg 4.0 petrol (89k on clock)

When i bought the jeep end of last year i drove it back and saw it was leaking coolant only a small drip, so drove it straight to garage and they said they could not find a leak???! Drove it for a bit keeping a close eye on coolant, took it back to the garage, they said the rad had gone - so replaced the rad. Drove around for a day and coolant nearly empty - back to garage - water pump had gone  - so replaced. Drove it around for a bit and still leaking - getting very pissed off now! They said the pressure hose had gone - so replaced that.

Now when driving the fan seems to come on all the time and the temp gauge went up to about 104 today. Noticed i still have a very slow drip of coolant but seems to be coming out a lot further back than it was before.
The coolant level is still the same give or take a few drips.

So please someone tell me what is up with it.... other than this HUGE problem it drives like a dream and is in mint condition with only 89K on the clock.

Thanks

My 4.0 always runs between 100 and 105,so don't see 104 being a problem :017:

mine sits at 100 and fluctuates between 90 and 100 and rearely goes any higher except for offroading.

where is the leak actually comming from. when sitting on the drive you should be able to see where its dripping. if it's from the rear then common sense would say the leak is from the back rather than radiator, water pump etc.

I am sure it is coolant as it is pink - the drip is coming from roughly in line with the front tyres in the middle. Just drove it 4 miles and left it for 30 mins and on way home the temp went up to 110 which it has never done before. Sorry not to be more specific but I am definitely a dumb blonde girl when it comes to cars!

One thing i would be doing is making a complaint to the mnanager of the garage as they have obviously "seen you coming" and probably charged for work that hasnt needed doing. Also if they didnt bleed the system properly it could have an air lock which might help to explain the high temps.Had a similar problem on a Pajero when i changed the thermostat until i managed to get the air out the system. Not saying its the case but its a possibility

Most of us are all based around the south side of birmingham, altho their are a few polishing experts  in worcestershire, Its a shame you are a not a tad bit closer to us as I am sure one of us could take a peek.

Jembo, I had a leak from what is probably the same place - coolant was coming from the water pump weep hole indicating that the pump bearing was worn. I replaced the pump and replace the thermostat, and coolant was piddling out the weep hole when I start up. It piddled coolant for quite a while on and off, and all I can assume is that there was air trapped in the system somewhere, so pressure was building up and forcing coolant out. I know on the water pump installation instructions it said that coolant may come out of the weep hole for a short time, but I don't think this should have been weeks! I tried bleeding the system again and again, and it now finally seems to be ok.

And I've now decided that the problem was probably due to the numpty who installed the thermostat (that'll be ME) installed one without the air bypass hole. I think what happened is that the lack of the air hole stopped the system bleeding properly. I need to take the thermostat out and drill a small hole in it for the air to go through, just in case I get air in the system again.

Beginning to think the new water pump has failed, as there is no coolant circulating around at all...

Would a dodgy thermostat & or a big air lock do that too ?

I don't know why they didn't change the thermostat - they seem to have replaced everything else. i guess there is not a lot of mark up on a new stat though.

my old one did this and my new one

old one was stat sticking sometimes the new one was water pump

plus sometimes they leak from the hoses when up to temp a change of hose clips fixes that

I've had to change the clips on hoses on mine as well, not a hard thing to do so that it can be ruled out.

Finally got the jeep back today - not great news. There was a coolant leak coming from the gear box - so they have said it is probably a core plug blown - great! Quoted me a vast amount to fix (10 hours)!!

They have put some sealant in it to see if that seals it up or not. It is not leaking at the moment (not sure which brand they used)

Basically this would explain why the coolant in the bottle was staying full but the rad was losing water and the system was not under pressure.

If anyone has other thoughts on this would be very gratefully received.
Also if any birtys want to play around with fixing a core plug, please feel free!!

I am confused,i cant see how a core plug going would cause leakage from the gearbox seeing as the core plugs are in the block of the engine.I think they just havnt a clue and are trying to baffle brains with bullshit.I could be wrong as im no Jeep expert but happy to put my hands up if i am

its common for there to be a core plug behind the flywheel, and to replace its prop, trans, starter motor, gearbox, clutch, flywheel/flex plate off and refitted so 10 hrs sounds right for a garage to fit a 2 quid part

I took it to mean that the leak was dripping off the gearbox, rather than actually coming from the gearbox. Some of the core plugs are really far back and could easily cause a weep to work it's way down to the gearbox and drip off.

what i am worried about is - if they have to remove the prop, trans, starter motor, gear box etc to fit the new plug what else will go wrong when they refit - they are bound to come up with something that needs replacing.
