brake upgrade
« on: April 13, 2011, 07:22:41 PM »

Spent the afternoon fitting a new master cylinder and took the opportunity to fit one from a Ford f350 van which is supposed to make a huge difference to the stopping power of a Jeep running big tires/axles.

Only needed a few minor tweaks to fit, just do a google search for info, loads of write ups already on the web.

I'll let you know how much of a difference soon as its back on the road.

I don't think it is better, but certainly I think its cheaper :)

bang for buck I don't think its a bad option, new master cylinder cost me £50 plus delivery, but then I sourced one in the UK I think if you were to prepared to shop around and didn't need in a hurry you could get from the US for a bit cheaper

Will let you know the result when I test them.

I may have given a bit of duff info there as well, what I meant was £50 for a re-manufactured unit, ie a old unit rebuilt by the manufacturer .... but the supplier was USAutomotive.co.uk and I'm fairly certain the part number was MC39445.... I'll dig the invoice out and double check that tomorrow

some pics for the believers :)

the first one is the two on the bench, almost exactly the same size on the outside, but its the inside where the magic happens.
Second one is fitted, in my case I had to shorten the bolts to get it to fit but thats becasue my front shock hoops are too close, you have to slightly widen the holes, not much tho... and then shave a little bit off the outside to make it bolt up correctly... nothing major just get the nail file out and that should be it.
3rd pic you can see the small amount I had to remove on the outside.

Have done some more research ie google/pirate I think it depends on your setup as to how successful this upgrade is, most people seem to see the biggest improvement when running larger than stock calipers and discs all round.  I run d60's front and rear with disc's all round so I expect to see some amount improvement over stock, according to the masses just bolting this onto stock callipers you won't see any improvement.

Did this on the silver wrangler has the D60 brakes front and rear - this is not a simple "bolt on" you have to adapt the push rod in the servo - I have a complete master cylinder and adapter here in storage (yes I bought into this too) Hydroboost is the only answer!!!

Heard this before re not being as good as you dreamed................

Have to say long before I knew about this upgrade and my YJ passed an MOT with 33s and then failed it with 35s  I had to do some'at..............that I could afford.

Turned out to be Master power brake sevo...... monster 9" (matron!) and dual diaphragm.......bolted on and made monster impression..........passed MOT and almost jumped off the rollers.............

There is a 8" sold for cheap my Davis offroad unlimited and it is very mercury draw thingy induction related.........ie a lumpy cam and it wont work...loads of bitchin' and fighting about that one on the web.

However  my 9" (sorry) works a treat and cos its 2 big resevoirs for disc disc I am hoping it will work with my1 ton front and 3/4 ton rear disc system.

Time will tell.

BUT if I could afford the Hydroboost...........Oh yes......lean down and stop with your fingers on the pedal...nice

Iomanky according to your avatar you have three legs, therefore couldnt you use your "spare" leg to give you twice the pressure on the brake pedal.
Those two legs combined with the heavy weight of your bulging wallet bearing down on the brake pedal will surely make you unstoppable :017:

You could then sell your hydroboost to poor old apache and help out a fellow birty what do you think? :003:

My middle leg is only for the Lady's and as such I must conserve all energy - so your double whammy theory you currently use in the "KY"crew does not transfer (yes I said transfer) our lass will confirm this fact!!!

Thats okay but you would have to build the air up like a proper wagon before setting off in order to release your brakes and like a true truck driver that would mean revving the engine to about 2500rpm for 5 minutes. After which you can dispose of that prostitute you picked up at the truckstop on the M1 :icon_eek:
