3" Lift fitting to XJ?
« on: May 14, 2011, 07:12:01 PM »

My rear leafs are a little tired - not bad but I've been tinkering with my XJ over the last couple of weeks and rather than risk buying heavy duty leafs off ebay, fit some spring spacers and end up with a horrible ride.

I'm thinking of the Llama 4X4 3" lift advertised on their site.   Is it something that could be fitted on a driveway over a weekend?   Id rather not have to pay a garage to fit it.

if you have some moderate spanering skills ya should be ok. just have a good breaker bar to hand, soak everythin in wd or diesel for about a week or so and be prepaired to drill and tap top shock mounts on the tail end. just follow the instructions and get stuck in. dont understand why david at lamma dont advertise on here to be honest. dont know what we done to him. :017:

 :iagree:  What he said.

Also, I think its Rough Country stuff that Liama sell, so make sure the lift kit comes with full springs not just the add-a-leaf jobs if your rear springs are shot.

only put add a leaf packs with new springs.

soak all bolts with "plus gas" or similar for a week. make sure the jeep is well secure on axle stands and on sturdy ground. apart from that it's a simple case of removing stubborn bolts. check that the leaf springs come with the bushes and if they are prefitted

Will check if bushings are in already.  Would only buy the kit if they are complete rear leafs.

Is rough country an OK make? Not fussed on a particular brand as long as it does the job and isn't too crashy a ride.

I was under the jeep at the weekend putting an exhaust bandage around the cat to the rear section.  It always seems to leak from there and the bandage lasts about a year before needing replacing - the old one just fell apart as I took it off.

When I bought the jeep, the owner had bought but not fitted a set of Jeep mudflaps which I fitted on Saturday.

I've got a trolley jack but even so had to put wooden blocks on the jack to get enough height to remove the wheels.   My axle stands also dont go high enough so put a block on them as well.   What do you guys do to get more height from jacking - I'll look a bit of a tit if I change the leafs then can't raise it enough to get the wheels back on.

Removing the rear leafs.

Is it just the 4 nuts holding the U bolts to the axle and the two big bolts front and back on the leaf itself?  My only worry is shearing a bolt because I don't have a tap set to make another thread - I've done it before but not on a thread that big.

With the shocks, the bottom mount is just a bolt but looking at the top is there two bolts either side of the shock that need to be undone?   Only got a partial look at the mounting on Sat.

The fronts.

I guess the fronts aren't too complicated - compression thingies for the springs and remove the shocks?

I had a good look underneath my Jeep and it seems really clean.  Ony things that look really really rusty are the anti roll bars and the rear driveshaft.  The underbody is all really clean looking.

get yourself a bigger trolley jack and axle stands to start with, you will need them if you do any work later on  :icon_winkle:

if you soak everything beforehand you could be lucky, also loosen the bolt a few turns, then soak with penetrating fluid and do it up then fully off. Rear shocks have 2 small bolts high up, soak the back of the bolts as much as you can and use lots of extension sockets to get a decent pull. If you snap one then drill out and either tap or go bolt and nut.

front shocks and springs easy, just watch what your doing with the spring compressors and remember you can get more movement oft the axle by disconecting tha sway bar.

Thats about it, oh and always use 6 sided sockets to avoid misery

good luck
