Jeep WJ Tweeters
« on: May 27, 2011, 08:16:59 PM »

Down loaded some old school hip hop onto the ipod this week and tonight I have blown the tweeters in the dash,

The system is the infinity one,

What size tweeters do I require / what fits for a replacement.

Cheers

J.

you need 2.5" 4ohm tweeters as a direct replacement these are an oddball size and not very common, but are still available at wjjeeps.com but are costly . i am currently using 2" 4ohm wharfedale in mine which give a very crisp response that suit a heavy bass quite well

Ok that's great thanks, I noticed how mentally expensive direct replacement ones were. Should have stuck with the country tunes, the tweeters preferred those! Will disconnect the mullered ones tomorrow and see where I can get yours from.

are you sure its the tweeters? they can take a lot of stick usually a lot more than the standard system can kick out.

No this is 100% the tweeter in the dash, I can clearly hear it, sounds like all the material that makes the tweeter has gone, will disconnect it this morning, and go shopping.

Being a bit of a car stereo geek I find it hard to believe that a change in music style blew your tweeter, the frequencies used by the tweeter are extreme high frequency and thus would not be associated with the heavy bass note given from modern hip hop. If you are indeed correct then the crossover that removes the bass frequencies from the speaker has failed and allowed low frequencies to pass through the tweeter thus destroying it. Now on an after market setup the crossover is a seperate box that is installed between the large speaker (mid bass) and the tweeter thus allowing the high notes to the tweeter and the low notes to the mid bass speaker. On a factory setup this could be the case or it could be a capacitor on the actual speaker or it could be within the stereo unit itself. Until you find this out I would not just replace the speakers as it could well happen imediatley again.

If you are replacing speakers especially seperates (tweeter/mid bass) then I suggest you change both sets with both the speakers (tweeter/midbass) as they are designed to work together to create the best sound. Installing aftermarket speakers into a factory setup can be challenging on some vehicles, usually the mid bass will fit right in but the tweeter is a little more challenging. Also remember that the tweeter is a directional speaker where as the mid bass is not, thus the tweeter needs to be positioned so that the sound waves are not completley opposite each other, usually about 15 deg to the rear of the car so that the sound combines at the position of the centre arm rest.

I could go on for ages but I think you will get the drift

Cheers for that, or it could be coincidence that they went when I was listening to different music, I have decided to go to ultimate audios by me this afternoon as this is what they do for a living and see what they have and suggest.

The sound you are hearing is a blowen voice coil (parts that creates the sound) they are a little different to a normal speaker but effectively this ruptures and creates a grating sound

Hey guys, speakers and especially tweeters do wear out. And lets face it the speakers in a WJ are between 7 to 12 years old.

Reading the US Grand Cherokee web sites it is obvious that the tweeters blowing is a very common fault.
I doubt if they were manufactured by Jeep themselves, they would have been bought in by whoever offered to manufacture a couple of hundred thousand at the lowest possible price. They sit there under the windscreen getting frozen and brittle in the winter and roasted by the sun in the summer.

When they start rattling the usual cause is that the fine wire coil that is glued to the back of the diaphragm comes unstuck. Fatigue caused by old age.

2nd cause is a very loud signal, this causes the diaphragm to come so far out of its slot that the diaphragm permanently warps so the coil touches the magnet and rustles, or the coil detaches from the diaphragm, ( that is on the reverse stroke when the coil is sucked further into the magnet than the diaphragm wii permit and so it unglues itself.)

When they just pack up it is usually at the point where the wire bends to form a coil which is mechanical fatigue. Often if there was a thin spot in the wire of the coil it will fail there.

Put too loud a signal in for too long and the wire in the coil heats up and either it burns out or it fries the varnish that is put over the coil to insulate it and it expands and distorts, rubs on the slot and eventually wears through the wire.

It's a tweeter, it is supposed to produce vibrations at between 2 thousand up to 16 thousand a SECOND! Poor little buggers get tired. There's guys on the internet supposedly selling better manufactured ones than OEM stuff. If it is any good it will cost. If it's too cheap it is no good.

Actually different types of music accentuate different frequencies so it is possible a change in musical tastes causes you to push the speaker levels past their comfort zones.
Also you are getting older and deafer every day so you are turning it up louder just to get your jollies.

Sorry for the lecture, 30 years a Rock and Roll sound engineer; I've blown more speakers than you guys have blown engines!

Just doing mine now, I have used the original jeep tweeter housing and stripped the internals out. Then mounted the new tweeters into the housing. Just waiting for some adhesive to dry to hold it all in place and I will take some pics.

There is a guy on eblag that sells Samsung TV speakers, glued to a plastic 'holder' for want of a better word, that fits into the specific cut outs.  I bought two of these (£40 odd) and one blew a while back, and he replaced it free of charge.

The thing is, I've still got the old one, with the plastic template, that I can use to make more templates to hold speakers in place, that will fit into the dash.  So, you could get a pair of speakers, and I can make some template, holdery things, or I could go into production with some nice little 2.5" tweeters mounted onto the plastic template......

Get manufacturing mate, seriously trying to get a direct replacement in the uk in impossible.

Mine are in, will post pics in a bit. Had to completely change all the setting but got the sounds as I like it now. Was more base orientated with the different tweeters in, so dropped this down and its seems ok and gives a decent sound again.

These are what I have installed.

"In Phase" 38mm tweeters, 4ohm 200watt max, on offer at the Car Audio Centre reduced from £89.99 to £44.99.

They fit in the existing OEM casings and the sound is a 100x's more crisp than before.

Really pleased with the finished result, and cheaper than replacing with more crappy OEM ones.
