4wd problem on my 4litre cherokee 1996 74k
« on: June 17, 2011, 09:24:37 PM »

Hello dastards,

I wonder if anyone can help me, I am in a bit of trouble? Driving home in my Jeep when I engaged the 4WD part time option on the gearbox. However, it will not go back to 2WD mode. I engaged it as was described in the manual and being as I cannot get it back into 2WD mode, it is terrible to drive. Please help!!

Not only is it terrible to drive, but you're ruining the transfer case. Can you get it into full-time 4WD? At least that
won't wreck it. The T/C on the XJ can tend to get fussy when it's not taken out of 2WD much. Whenever I had
it stuck, I'd park it on the flat, and yank at it like a bastard until it gives in.

Yeah, you'll have to get rough if it ain't been getting a lot of use.

thanks 4 answer tim,it was pissing down with rain so i thought id try the system,i dont think its ever been used before but as soon as i engaged it,it felt shit so i put the lever straight back to the 2wd position but the part time lamp stayed on and it wont disengage,i had to drive 3 miles to get home but it was raining,im just gonna go back out 2 it 2 see if its any better,i dont think the jeeps ever even towed or been abused before so it is strange,i was only doing 15 mph when i engaged it

if i understand you properly the 4wd lever is moving through its positions but the part time light is not going out, this is very common, the easiest way to get the transfer box to go back to 2wd is a good stamp on the brakes while on rough ground this will get the abs working and all will be well again.

If mine did this sometimes I'd reverse a bit stamp on the brakes and then pull forward sharpish.

I could hear it clunk back into 2wd.

if you search there are a few topics on this subject.

the main problem is the lack of use swapping between p4wd and 2wd.

if the jeep doesn't drop into 2wd keep moving around 20-30mph and drop into nuetral then back into drive and the transfer box should drop back to 2wd. some people give a slight blip of the throttle while in neutral as well. another is to put it back into 4wd and then push the lever hard back into 2wd as Tim suggests. Stopping and reversing sometimes helps but might not be practical at times.

get underneath and give the linkage system a good oiling and start swapping between 4wd and 2wd as the more it's used the less it will be a problem

Drive onto a slippery surface (neighbours gravel drive or front lawn are good) Stop, floor it a couple of times so the wheels slip. Bang! it should come out. Then drive off dead straight, put it in full time 4wd and leave it there.

Mine was/is exactly the same.  I can change mine but only when everything is nicely warm.

At first I thought I'd broken it.  Put it in 4WD and the light came on for 4WD but on full lock one of the wheels would hop.  Had to rag the lever back and fore and it finally went back into 2WD.

I've left mine in 2WD.  I find the steering wheel tugs a little bit when it's in 4WD.  Catches me out from time to time but keeps me on my toes :D

Those XJs drive better in permanent 4wd than 2wd IMHO.
I was a non believer 'til pointed in the right direction by folks on here.

Lack of shifting is the problem and one day you might need the get of jail card.

Didn't explain that very well.
Meant fulltime 4wd-that be fine on all surfaces.
Part time will wind the transmission up on tar :jpshakehead:
