Cherokee (2004) folding mirrors problem
« on: September 05, 2011, 07:35:33 PM »

I was getting my Cherokee checked over by my local Land Rover dealer (there are no Jeep dealers in these parts!) before heading off at the weekend back to the UK and they managed to scrape the nearside front wheel arch and clip the passenger door mirror (It's a UK model so RHD and I guess the mechanic wasn't used to it and just misjudged it). They have accepted responsibility for the damage even though neither of us could prove who did it and it's back with them today to get the wheel arch repainted. But the mirror is more problematic. The whole electric folding and adjustment mechanism is iffy at the best of times and after I get the Jeep washed the adjustment won't work until the next day when the water has dried out of the circuitry! But now after the apparent clip (there's a scrape on the black plastic housing that definitely wasn't there before)  while the mirror adjustment is more or less OK, when I open the mirrors from the folded position, the left hand one makes a click, click sound once fully opened until I take my finger off the switch. The right hand mirror just opens with no noise. Anyone any idea whether this can be fixed without replacing the whole mirror. I really don't want to have to try and go down that road with the guys at the garage as at the end of the day it's only my word against theirs.

sounds like the motor doesn't know where the end of its adjustment is. Not looked inside one TBH & I bet its full of plastic & not easily fixed.

Si,

I have the same with my KJ where, in my case (ehm Mrs.), the drivers door mirror was knocked by previous owner and was held in place by sikaflex on the join.

Looked on Lost KJ's for pointers to repair this but this is a 'lost' cause according to the posters there.   Whereas the WJ mirror you can take to bits and rebuild (which I've done) the only fix seems to be a straight replacement new or breakers.

The sika let go at some point so I now fixed in place with araldite.   Just have to live with the fact that they cannot fold in.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions guys. I think I'll probably just have to put up with things as they are as replacing the mirror assembly is very expensive I gather and I doubt if the garage are going to volunteer to do so.
