Right, myself and Rob messed about with the valve block the weekend and found a broken spring in the hydraulic part of 3rd gear.

We fixed this and it worked better but I was still riddled with gearbox fault codes.

Today Carlos dropped me over a replacement gearbox ECU. I have installed this and all the previous codes have cleared but I have a new one.

P0888 - any ideas?

Re phrase that, still only 3rd gear but fault codes P0888 and P0846 now??

Looking like I need to source a replacement Valve block or complete gearbox.

In my daughter's 1999 GC SE the transmission stayed in 2nd gear when it had about 85,000 miles on the odometer. The problem with her GC SE transmission was an "O" ring somewhere in the transmission and the repair cost was quite reasonable at the Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep dealership

These only came to light when I put the replacement ECU in, I haven't got the previous shift solenoid coded now but still have the symptoms.

I really do not want to go the main dealer route due to costs.

I have found (well Rob officially) a replacement solenoid pack in the states for sensible money, just awaiting a shipping quote.

If you've changed the transmission control module, you have to use a DRBIII to make it learn the clutch volume indexes of the transmission or you will get shift quality problems.

At the moment I still haven't got any shifting though, just 3rd limp home mode exactly the same as before?

Is the Jeep ok to use in limp home mode? I know I towed back from France with it but had no choice, but I have to pick up a caravan next weekend for a friend, only local, will it be ok.

On the valve solenoid packs that are for sale in the states there are the following:

45RFE and 545RFE,

I know the 545RFE was an upgrade but an most of the listings they both come under the same heading. So I am correct in saying the 45 or 545 will fit?

This is now really pissing me off.

Reason I wasnt getting the shifting was that the connector on the valve block had come loose. re connected that and all day today I have had gears and not engine management lights.

After a few trips out and about and its playing up again.

So the only conclusion I can come to is the replacement ECU has a fault as I have swapped and changed the 2 ECU's over and both give different fault codes but cause limp home mode.

FWIW as you may know I needed a new ABS ecu some time ago.

At 700 quid new delivered and installed from dealer you can allow a bit of a flyer from 't net.

First one from Carlos was a dud (not at all Carlos' fault, its just this electrickery).

Second one off ebay was a success, delivered to dealer to install and programmed through their computer.

When all was said and done it still set me back the best part of 300 quid or so.

Sometimes you just have to cut your losses ......and 300 or 500 for that matter does not buy you another GC 2.7.

Little consolation, I know.......

Nice to know you had similar problems with a dud to start with, all be it the ABS.

And ............................................... it appears with the new ECU off Carlos it now works as it should.

So all in all, a potentially costly breakdown in gears has been cheap ish to fix.

Not read the codes yet as Nat has the car, will see what its throwing up when I get back.

Looks like the Valve Block and shift solenoids are going to be on order from the states tonight.
