TJ Dana 44 (rear) Pinion bearing
« on: November 18, 2011, 09:25:13 PM »

How can I test if it is fubar? I have some strange knocking noises/feeling through gearstick going on underneath that only seem to happen in 1st and a bit in 2nd. It's not as bad in 4wd.

My plan in the morning is to have the rear diff pan off to check oil and teeth

ok, so I took off my rear prop and noticed that the Double Cardan ball-y bit is dry as and seems to have lots of play/ clunky movement. I have a spare front prop with a DC on one end which feels substantially better. Am I able to swap one with the other? is it a PITA job? or should I pack it with grease and hope for the best, get 7 sisters out of the way (next weekend) and then try to rebuild/get it rebuilt.

Payday is on Friday and at the moment I am operating on an ants shoestring so can't afford anything spent on it

like i say i fully understand there use and aplication  and for me i would have less lft or another work around they are to dear for servicing and purchase for my liking  and fail with bad consequences

its not a question of right or wrong merly taste

a single uj can be easily fixed in the field several times over to the cost of a cardon jointed shaft

your right they do have a place and for me its on the expensive shelf of the maker and not on my jeep

They can be rebuilt but the full set of parts will cost almost as much as a new one or professional re-furb of your knackered one from my experience. Somewhere around the £300 mark, especially if you want it done quickly

Hmm, doom and gloom then.

After removing my rear diff cover I found a shed load of metal filings in the oil and upon further inspection, I have found that one of the arb short spider gear shafts has come loose and has been on and off having a few tete a tete's with the pinion gear  :011: :011:

according to the exploded diagram, there is a locking screw on the shaft, I'm hoping that's missing, and i have something that will plug the hole otherwise its no 7s for me :icon_sad:

Are you trailering to 7S? If so you might be able to sort it with grease and a few bodges but it sounds like an expensive proper fix afterwards  :jpshakehead:

yes, trailering to 7s potentially.
Looking at the exploded diagrams again it seems I have the older type arb which has locking screws but are under a bit of casing, so unless I can strip the arb and fix it, I don't know, do i just go and hope for the best? the spider gear can't come out and James yes I think you are correct, its looking like an expensive repair, in fact having re-assessed the whole rear end today, the whole lot needs re-working as its not really working right at the moment.

Hmm, new arb, new dc prop shaft, maybe new R&P and bearings, new rear shock mounts and new shocks, seems I'd better enter that millionaire a week thing....got my crimbo list sorted :003:

There's still that one on the bay in merseyside ........... £295.........from a chevyvan/motorhome...we now think is a Dana70.............  lockright and ring and pinion change and weld on TJ bits and could be on your rig for £750 ish....better than rebuilt 44 with ailing australian stuff in the pig........(stir stir)

Just think......... 5,000 rpm dump clutch and no worries of a breakage :icon_twisted:

I must now appologise for spending the money of others in my lunch break  :hysterical:

or those tera 60's that were on the bay...

Perhaps its time to stop, pause and reflect for a while, work my ass off in a bid to save up for a year to follow the wonton trail.

Trouble is, i'll always find something else to spend it on.

For the moment at least, a plan has been hatched so i can still get to 7sisters, now. Wheres that welder...

Now there's an idea......weld up the platetaries and case..... after taking out ARB....... (you'l need original carrier for that tho.......?) then its only £300 for the prop..... :icon_twisted:

Oh.......tis never finished :pokinit:
