fuck it!
« on: November 02, 2011, 04:59:49 PM »

having a great time sorting out this shock absorber, after drenching it everytime I passed the car since monday with wd40, today I try to remove it , it snapped!
So got out a sawzall and removed the threaded bolt welded to the mount with the aim of welding on a replacement. cut it flush with the surface only to find there must still be a bit of thread in the plate as well as its  not giving up whats left of the bolt!

My TJ is full off fucked bolts, I'm slowly replacing them along with re-tapping and using copious amounts of copper slip

Not much help now I know.

But WD40 is water dispersal... it's used for many things. But I'm not sure rusty bolts is it's best.

Recently I've been using a proper dismantling and penetrating fluid, not sure if it's just been luck, but it appears to massively out perform WD40 on undoing rusty nuts and bolts.

If you want the ultimate in penetrating fluid to get off rusty bolts then mix up a 50/50 mix of ATF (automatic trans fluid) and Acetone (thinners), was told about this a while back and have tried it myself with amazing results, I managed to remove all my chassis bolts including spring to axle U bolts without straining or breaking one. I put it into an old Mr Muscle bottle and now I use this everywhere before I attempt to undo a bolt/nut (spray, leave for 10mins or more and undo), just word of warning its not great on painted surfaces so just bear that in mind when you are spraying the stuff about.

The original Plus Gas was the stuff  used in garages back in late 60s 70s it smelled like bubble gum and did what it said on the tin!   :icon_winkle:
