high guys I'm new to the jeep seen. have had a few offloads. Suzuki SJ/hilux/landy 90 and 1 or two smashers we got in at work for the scrap heap.

but this new vehicle i got as a project seems to have me puzzled. iv trained as a mechanic for a number of years but the vm engine is very unown in ireland and please don't hate me because I'm actual from somerset. lol

but hopefully ye can shed some light on my mishaps

for starters my jeep has a terrible missfire at about 2k rpm it is hard start and very smokey. but i personally think its letting in air. iv checked all the obvious. like return pipes and connections. but i have herd stories of the no.1 injectore giving trouble. but I'm unsure>??? that's the first problem.

second is again the infamous interior heat issue. my engine runs at 40 on the temp gauge is this the normal running temp? my heat in the cab is Luke warm but not enough to heat the vehicle just clean window. wife has me tormented. ha ha. if some one could tell me if the engine is running to cold ill get new stat that should solve it. or if heater matrix is blocked ill flush it..?? (my heater cowl is removed)

thirdly now this is only minor and my be the cause of the heating problem but i seem to be missing something in passenger foot well. it sit just up behind the dash on passenger side to do with heater. has two connections. whatever it is its missing. is it the motor that decides where the air goes by any chance as the air in my cab just goes to screen and feet???

and the last thing for now is my brakes. iv no vacuum on my brake booster is this a worn out vac pump on alternator??

all the help will be greatly appreciated and ill be a strong member of this forum as ye seem to be a sound bunch. looking through old posts and topics. ye seem to no yer stuff...

FAIR PLAY lads

please excuse my spelling

the vm diesel is well known for cracked heads the 2.5 more so than the 3.1. due to the cooling system not being big enough.
had a look at the fsm for the 2.5 and the vacuum pump is driven off the timing chain, so you have to strip it all to bits to get it out.
this is the manual i found....

i was hoping it wasn't this. as the pipe that goes from the brake booster goes to a pump on alternator. but ill havfe resurch interweb on that pump and  see if it common for going.

the reason for the heads failing on this poorly specked engine as there was minimal quality control leaving the castings very susceptible to porosity, this was a main problem with the mk1, these heads can be quickly be identified by not having valve stem seals. Any new replacement now has a seat machined for a seal. The mk2 heads had a far better control in the quality of the casting but still they were known for failure. The rovers fitted engines were expected to fail around the 60k at a surprising regularity.

parts can be swapped from the ford and rover variety as this engine was fitted to the 820 and scorpio but dont expect everything to fit. the mk1 was a mechanical pump and the mk2 was electronic. Be careful of the No.1 injector as these have a sensor wire fitted which is ridiculously expensive to replace new.
A good maintained cooling system will help longevity and the heater is dire and appears to take forever to warm up.

when running the engine is great but when it fails it is a money pit on the big scale.

it's cheaper to run a 4ltr petrol than constantly repair the diesel.
