xj coil spring spacers
« on: December 09, 2011, 01:45:59 PM »

hi all.

i recently had a set of new xj diesel leafs fitted to my '95 4.0 and fitted 30" mud tyres. the jeep needs a true 1.75" lift to the front as it is sitting very nose down at the moment due to the new leaf springs and tired front coils. i had initially bought a set of coils off a v8 gc - (these ones) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160678250479?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

the garage i got the leafs fitted at said they didn't fit but i was under the impression they should go straight on. i made them aware that they were off a different vehicle incase they had just looked and saw they were different to the ones that were on and left it there. anyway, i then got these - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/270858009687?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 and would be more than happy to just fit spacers now looking at the jeep with the new leaf springs on.

i was sure that with the purchase of the above spacers this would be it sorted, yet apparently these don't fit either. the hole in the middles of the spacer is too small aparently. am i missing something here? can anyone shed any light on where the problem may lie and how i can get it sorted?

on a side issue the jeep has started knocking badly when turning a corner, the garage told me the ball joint on the bottom of the steerung joint was worn and needs replaced, could this be the cause of the knocking? i have had it on a jack today and can't see anything obviously wrong and the tyres definitely arent't rubbing anywhere.

thanks in advance and advice or opinions appreciated as always, tony.

Ball joint might need replacing, maybe more than one, best to get the axle jacked up so you can wiggle the wheel, probably helped with a big pry bar to see where the movement is.

Those spacers are the correct ones so they are either manufactured badly and the hole is the wrong size or the garage is trying to fit them wrong or just being stupid.

As for the springs, I don't think that shape Grand has springs that fit on an XJ. The earlier grand springs do swap and I bought some Old Man Emu springs designed for a V8 ZJ grand for my XJ as they lift it a bit higher than the stadard XJ ones.

i did this but with steel washers. and my friend has a lenth of steel pipe with a washer welded on the end. makes for a great cheap lift. the only thing is ya need the rubber spacers to quieten things down
