Ignition Key?
« on: April 05, 2009, 12:24:08 PM »

Hi need help.

This problem surfaced yesterday, and I cannot figure it out. We have two seperate sets of keys for our GJC, my wife normally drives the jeep the whole time, but yesterday she called, saying the car wouldn't start. She put the key in the Ignition, and nothing happened. I told her to try locking and unlocking the car several times. She eventually called the AA, waited witha cup of coffee, then her friend tried it, and bingo, it started easily. She got home and took my keys, went to ASDA, came out, and same thing again. A taxi driver came to her assistance, and same thing again, it started no problem. I went out this morning, none of the keys will work, tried alittle WD40 and air duster, the keys still won't turn. basically now stuck. Can anyone offer advise, apart from getting a new car.

Thanks in adavance.

Yup, that's standard.

Take the cowl off the steering column. Put a key in the lock. Give it a few sharp taps on the end until the lock un jams and turn the key to the run position and leave it there. Find the release button for the ignition barrel on the barrel casing and press it while pulling the key and barrel out of the column. Disconnect the battery. Take the lock and key to a Jeep dealer and they will make a copy that fits the original key.

Thanks for the replies people. Eventually got AA home start to call, and they confirmed your responses. !! Barrels buggered !!
I'm gonna have to get the Jeep into local dealer, via AA tow truck, and have the barrel replaced. The Jeep has been problem free since we bought it second hand 2 years ago, and with only 52k on the clock, I'm surprised the Ignition barrel has gone so soon, but S*** happens. I also found out why she handled appalingly poorly. Wrong tyres were fitted from the outset, it was like driving a jelly mould. Just replaced the tyres with 235 x 65 x 17, instead of the 225 's fitted.

 Don't let them touch it until you've agreed a price.

I've done loads of these and have always got the barrel out without damaging anything else, and the whole thing should be done within an hour's labour.

Hi Guys,

Mine failed tonight at the petrol station, I guess I done want to be wait and see when it happens again so I had better replace the barrel and key. I have had a look around on the internet and seen prices from $30.00 upwards, any idea how much I am going to be paying for mine from a Jeep dealer tomorrow?

Is there anywhere else in the UK I could try to buy one from?

thanks for your help.
