transmission clunk

Hi peeps
My 98 cherry has been making a clunk since i bought it, mainly when driving at steady speed when you give it some gas you can hear and feel a clunk from the propshaft / rear axle, sometimes when you stick it in drive it clunks as it takes the torque of the gearbox, it has done 116k so do I put it down to wear and tear?
Thanks in advance....

crawl under and check the rear prop uj's by trying to move the prop by hand.
if all good there you need to remove the cover on the diff and have a look inside. However you will need fresh oil to top up and some rtv to seal it when you put it back. you are looking for metal bits and play in the side bearings inside.

Got underneath today and I can spin the prop by hand so I take it the uj's are worn?

Are you actually "spinning" the shaft or moving it up and down? If you are spinning it I take it you have the rear wheels off the ground? The movement you are looking for is the up and down movement at either end of the shaft, this "play" will indicate a worn UJ.
