Rattles and knocks
« on: May 16, 2012, 10:23:57 AM »

Hi all
On our new (to us) 2002 Cherokee 3.7 we seem to have loads of rattles and knocks around the rear end, or so they seem to be. I am thinking that the rear shocks are on their way out and are making all this noise. We also have squeaking when going over speed bumps. I don't think the exhaust is loose but haven't been able to check so far (had a small operation on my toes and cannot get shoes on so unable to do much at all until the stitches come out), so I am wondering if anyone has had a similar problem or does anyone know the answer.
Thanks in advance

There are quite a few movable parts on the rear end which could could cause knocking sounds..upper control arm [boomerang shaped] has a ball joint and two bushes..lower control arms have two bushes each..shockers have two rubber bushes each. I've just replaced all of the above, including new shocks and she's as smooth as a babies bum and very quiet now. Check your exhaust mountings, as they are also rubber and wear or perish over time. Check and make sure your handbrake cable isn't slapping against the axle tubes..they are supposed to be held in position by a small bracket on each side, but these sometimes work loose and move out of place.

Something to go on when your foot is better.

Hi bgbazz
I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. The information is terrific, thank you very much. Not sure how I check for worn ball joints and bushes, I am guessing that I jack up the rear corners and wiggle stuff about and if it knocks or wiggles to much then it is that item that is at fault? I think I am able to check the exhaust and the hand brake cables are a great idea, wouldn't have thought about that.
Before you did yours did it feel a bit vague and wobbly at the back end? My wife's previous car (a LR Freelander dare I say) felt completely different, very tight at the rear and quiet, so you can imagine that she is not best pleased with this one....... :lol_hitting:
Thanks for the reply again, I really appreciate it.

Hi Keith [my middle name by the way]

best way is to jack her up high, place some floor stands or big wooden blocks under the body, just in front of the bolt that fastens the lower control arm to the body..loosen/crack the the wheel nuts before you jack her up, because you need to remove both back wheels. Once you have her up and safe enough to crawl under and apply a bit of muscle to all the joining points..use a pinch bar or similar on every moving joint [seven of them]. One of the most common is the ball joint on the upper control arm, where it connects to the top of the diff housing..if the rubber boot shows any sign of contact wear or the joint itself moves about..replace it. It's around 70 pounds for a Crown brand, which I find very good. Any of the bushings in the other areas which show signs of wear[movement] are around 16 quid each. If you are into serious off roading activities [I'm not] then you will pay a lot more for these replacement parts, but I use Raybestos bushes and Crown parts whenever I need them and get a very good result from both brands. When you get to stage of deciding what you might need, just give me a PM and I'll point you in the right direction for parts..all in the UK.

Just make sure the vehicle is solid on the jack or blocks BEFORE you crawl under there and start wriggling around.
