Spur of the moment
« on: March 26, 2012, 11:34:15 PM »

Well after 18mths finally dropped the TJ off at a bodyshop to repair the front wing & repaint due to the TJ reinforcing plate rot issue.
Quoted 2x what I'd expected but after you factored in the grill (110k  miles of stonechips), scuttle & bonnet etc. It seemed reasonable; labour rate was ok & they came recommended.
Then I spotted a couple of other marks & before I knew its in for a full strip down and respray; also going to weld up the redundant screw holes in the tailgate.
Seems a rash decision given its shiny apperance, but its a keeper.

So need to source:
new 7" flares (no point putting the stock scratched ones back on)
Door card snap clips
Full set of Wrangler sport decals.
Windscreen/hinge bolts; might replace these but don't want shiny.

I will need them in 2-3weeks so if anyone has suggestions/ideas on US (or UK) suppliers who are shipping promptly- let me know.

Heh Andy,

When they do the wings, make sure they do the whole area that the strengthening plate covers or it will come back in other places, I know  :icon_winkle:

Where are you having it done mate ?

Good luck with it  :003:

Dutch cheers for the link to the UNC supplier; I wouldve just painted over the current ones  on the hinge but the garage doing it want to strip, repaint, rebuild etc.

Will need TJ specific flares due to the repeater type; thinking Rugged Ridge as the bushwacker, warn etc are too much $; my budget is <$300. Anyone able to recommend? also saw TAG ones??

Got some stickers coming from ebay USA they're repoductions but cheap enough to chance.

Gaz, noted- Thanks! Yeah I saw in a post that your fender rot had come back back; strange as the job looked perfect!
Miller and Lloyd next to Fownes are doing the job; a colleague recommended them following some work he had done on his evo after a cat hit it.

It was nothing that the bodyshop had done wrong in fairness, all original fix was perfect, it was elsewhere above the strengthening plate  :banghead:

Best to do the whole area once & thats it   :icon_winkle:

Cheers Dutch; good price & in the UK: I need the 6pc kit so I've sent a Q to jeepey; as my old extension pieces have bad trail rash so no point putting them back on.
This build has caught me unaware as it wasn't planned to be so drastic so I'm quickly trying to find bits & pieces & not knowing where to stop; bumpers...!
Looking forward to the results though; I've always liked the TJ to be super clean; although still in good nick in the last year it'd lost some of its lustre so this should bring it back!

Hmmm would love a new set of bumpers but....
Seems Quadratecs shipping charges have rocketted; £120 to ship some flares and some stickers etc.
A couple of years ago I had a whole pallet of wheels, softops etc for not much more!
& Upto 3 weeks until it ships; so no good for the build.

So back to UK
Jeepey will sell me a set of 7" flares for v reasonable money at £220 but they're Crown which really put me off. Worth a punt?

Really great service from Jeepey so looking Fred to the flares arriving.

I had the misses lined up reluctantly to bring a load of parts back from the us whilst she's there, but quadratec misinformed me all were in stock but delayed the shipment for one small item, had to reroute to the uk and shell out more dollars.
Slow progress but getting there

Spur of the moment but now 3 months in the making! So much for 2-3wks.

Still no paint applied and the jeep is in about 500pcs; some of which I suspect now lost.
Annoying really as its not being done as a favour/foreigner.
If I wanted it to take forever I'd have done it myself.

I've set a deadline of June 8th. Trying to balance the need to get it back & ensure it gets the top job I know the shop is capable of.

Cheers Willo for the offer of bolts; the windscreen hinge bolts turned out to be in great condition.
Just need to get some replacement bolts for where the sportsbar meets the surround.

BD; Yep that makes sense; I'm seeing it.

Gaz; an influx of 'bread & butter' works such as bumper scrapes is apparently to blame for the delays to the TJ, due to the wet weather.
As I carefully pointed out the work on the TJ must yield equivalent $ to many minor repairs.
Its difficult to balance the urgency for getting the truck back vs the need for a top quality job which the guy is certainly capable of.
Flares are off & in the vehicle so they are yours when I get it back.

Cheers mate  :icon_winkle:

Be good to see it all finished soon I hope  :icon_jook:
