Not a Jeep problem but a Saab query

Morning all,

I have a Saab 93 1.9tid Manual, its done 64k now and I have had it since January when I brought it with 52k on it.

Apart from a routine service and alternator its been brilliant.

Last night after my drive home from work (78miles) I went into 1st to pull on my drive and 1st gear seemed really stiff. It went in so I checked all the gears whilst stationary and reverse and 1st were still stiff, others gears were ok.

This morning it felt the same but after a motorway blast and fast A roads 1st seems ok again but reverse still stiff (it has only gone into R a couple of times since yesterday to park up / do Manoeuvres).

Has anyone got any ideas / suggestions?

you mean stiff to engage the gear? Check the cables from the gear stick to the gearbox selector, could be stretching/breaking or loose or worn end bushes at eaither end

Yes still to physically put into gear - Clutch is fine as all other gears ok.

I have the lift the centre of the stick to engage reverse, could this be failing? or is that what you mean.

not if you had issues getting first as well. Its the cables from the bottom of the gearstick to the selectors on the gearbox I am talking about. I had issues on a fiat with bad selection & found one of my spanners stuck in the selector arms LOL

check where the clutch cable comes thru the bulkhead as the clutch ill work fine but it can be not fully separating the clutch from the flywheel so selection is bad but take off is fine.

Been on the Saab forum and apparently the Gear box selector unit does fail on these.

Exactly what Steve was suggesting, I can get one £37 delivered.

Fixed all on my own! Following Steve's advice I followed the cables from the selector to see the main wiring loom was loose.

This was then hanging on the selector cables and jamming when the gears were selected.

Result, cable tie fix!
