NP242 flip ? ? ?

Anybody know why I can't flip my np 242???

Please do t say the obvoiuse....
Oil pick up,
Breather pipe, and linkages. All minor stuff!

Trying to workout if I've missed anything???

Or does anyone have a cheap Dana 300?

go Dana 300 and then maybe box for rocks (range box off a 242 or 231 ) on the front to give ya crawler gears.

Because I like my 242 an think that might be easyer than flipping the front 44,
Just trying to work out the cheapest an easiest option. (cheapest is to flip the 44 but I can't be arsed so looking for the easyer option)

When you say range box, do you mean swap out the planetary gearset?

tis a kit from the US that just uses low range bit of box as an under drive..need a plate supplied to be alloy TIG welded but is cheap way to get to double your low range.

 Near as I can find to a website but loads on Pirate 4x4 I guess...... kit is made by Duffy at DD Machine and seems to cost $250 and your time and 231 box..... worth a trawl :icon_twisted:

Although I'm not to worried about the low gears on the transfer as I'm gonna run 5.88 in the axles!

I'm running 5.38s now over the 4.10 s of last year...... And standard Dana300 seems as low as 4 to 1 was last year
Compound 11:1 ish is just plain daft :icon_super:

5.88's in a Dana 35 is daft. Save your money and put some parts in an axle that is worth it. You should be able to find a used Dana 44 or something better and you will save money in the long run.

I don't think anyone's planning on using a Dana 35  :017:

Are you really attached to the 242 over a 231? I was when I used the XJ on the road a lot but am now thinking a 231 has more support in Jeep land for it and should? be an easier flip for you?? It's a bit of a Pirate searching questions though and I'm still recovering from the last time I spent time there  :icon_eek:

Got a feeling Dana 35 and 30 can only go to 4.88......

Dana 60s can go mental low 7. some'at if ya really want.

Ha ha ha no I'm not polishing the 35!!! Rear 60 an a 44 front with a drivers drop hence the reson I'm wanting to flip the transfer.

I am partial to the 242! But I'll do some searching tonight on the 231!
I know they are more liked in yank land but I'm not gonna be smashing it off rocks day in day out an the low axle gearing won't give it a hard job!

Be careful how low you go. I am on 36's with 5.13's and a 4 to 1 tcase and I find it to low in the mud here. I am great for rocks or technical stuff, a bit high in rpm on the road and but way under geared in mud. I find myself in fifth gear to often.

Yer that's where locked hi comes into play:)

Gonna be running 37's to start but with the miss calculation on my lift I recon I can run bigger  :icon_biggrin:

Cheers for the advice tho!!!!

I just hope I can light the back end up at the traffic lights
