ZG Rear Dif, Upgrade or Different One?
« on: February 22, 2006, 03:18:29 PM »

I need to get the ZG regeared soon as I'm up and about. I am looking at also getting the diffs overhauled with a trutrac in the back to replace the stock lsd and a locker in the front.
Now, while having a chat with Trent he mentioned it might be worthwhile upgrading the rear dif as the stock ones are a little weak.
SOOOOooooooo....... Whats the up's and downs of this, can I get a drop in replacment?, can i get it with the gearing required? does any of them come with a good lsd of the trutrac type??

Good idea, bad idea any other suggestions??

Oh yea and whats the likely cost difference between what i originally planned and a new dif?

Thanks

There seem to be some crossed wires here somewhere.

Your truck is fitted with an LSD in the rear and an open diff in the front.

The truetrac is Detroits limited slip diff.  This is a good bit of kit using gears instead of clutch plates like the one you have.  It also relpaces the standard carrier and is a much stronger beast.  There are two types of none switchable lockers. Ones which fit your existing carrier and ones which replace it.  Sticking with Detroit these are the ez locker and soft locker in their product line, there are others.

There are pros and cons to both.  If you keep your existing carriers then there is no need to regear and mess about with shimming etc. but you loose out on some strength.  If you replace the carrier then you have to transfir your ring gear on to  the new unit which means more work (probably best laft to someone who knows what they are doing.)  but gain strength.

I wouldn't stick an LSD in the back and a locker in the front either unless you are going to use an ARB type which you can switch on and off.  You want the locker in the back and the LSD in the front.

Unless you can live with it not going round corners in the wet.

I guess ultimaltely it's going to depend on where and how far you want to go with your jeep.
If your going to re-gear anyway, the super 35 kit will hardly cost any more to fit, when the gears are done.
A super 35 kit is upgraded axle shafts around 40% stronger then stock, and a detroit locker, including bearings etc at around $800-$900 US +tax/shipping. i
If your going to stick with roughly what your running at the moment, this kit is probably good insurance, and i know your main aim is reliability.

Yep sorry the one going in the front is an ARB type and will be off unless needed :)

The reason why i wanted to replace the LSD I have is that before I had it, it had run for quite some time with very little oil in the dif and if I'm honest for about 6 months while I had it as I didnt even know about checking those things.
So I'm thinking the stock one has got to be on the way out and I really prefure something like the trutrac as it's all gears and as long as it's kept well oiled nothing to go wrong, oh yea and no remembring things like friction modifiers :)
If it's worth putting a trutrac in the front as well I may well do that, have to look at the cost between that and a full locker I guess.

If you're thinking of ARBing the front, why not fit one in the rear along with Superior axle shafts and C-clip eliminator kit.

Seems strange, Truetrac for a dana35 is $330 but a detroit locker or any decent locker is $550+ I would have thought the LSD would have been more expensive.

So as a truetrac for a dana35 is $330 dollars, so even working on a $=£ by the time it's bought and shipped thats seems pretty cheap.

Looking like Truetracs on both difs seem the winner here for me, any downsides to this??

Will I also need new half shafts as the spline count seems diferent to standard?
