Mot due on XJ - is it worth fixing?
« on: September 22, 2012, 08:32:40 PM »

Hi all,Had my XJ Orvis 4.0L for a year now and it's been a fantastic drive!
The Mot runs out the end of this month and I know it's going to fail:

Rear exhaust pipe is held up by wire (rear clamp has rusted off)Centre exhaust box has a hole
Front discs and pads need replacing
Front lights are corroded
Handbrake has failed

And that's just the things I know before they do the mot.
To add it's got 152, 000 on the clock and the exterior is rough - rust spots, corroded alloys, badges peeling off.Although the interior is excellent!

I can't find any garages in Cornwall which know much about Jeeps so I would probably have to take it to the Jeep garage and buy parts from jeepymart or similar and hope that the parts are good.

It'll cost anything up to £ 1000 to get it sorted, so my question is....is it worth spending that kind of money on a vehicle which has 152, 000 miles or should I cut my loses, sell the jeep and then buy another?

Thanks for any advice.

Thanks for the fast responses.
I'm not mechanically minded so I won't be stripping it down.

So, I'm guessing my next best option is to scrap. How much do you think I should accept for scrap?

Scrw has offered you £400 and that is more than you will get scrap which would be about £200. Its a no brainer really

What you've listed should be anywhere near a grand. I don't know how close you are to Newquay, and he won't do many (if any) Jeeps but Adam at CVAS Auto in Tor Road, near the train station, is a damn good mechanic and he won't rip you off.

Thanks for advice, but I think it's best to scrap and buy another one.
I don't think it's worth plowing all that cash in.

The Mot runs out the end of this month and I know it's going to fail:

Rear exhaust pipe is held up by wire (rear clamp has rusted off)Centre exhaust box has a hole  £40 off flea bay
Front discs and pads need replacing    £40 each £40 for pads??
Front lights are corroded  search fleabay or bedford rascal lights as they are rumoured to fit
Handbrake has failed   these only work once for the mot needs adjusting

And that's just the things I know before they do the mot.
To add it's got 152, 000 on the clock and the exterior is rough - rust spots, corroded alloys, badges peeling off.Although the interior is excellent!

a bit of basic mechanics and £200 to £250 and your fixed ready for another 12 months. bodywork is just a bit of effort and sanding then paint. 152k miles is nothing for these engines. from my view i dont see the point of scrapping a car unless it is structurally condemmed

Take the 400 notes you've been offered and don't look back (my advice FWIW)

Seriously mate, take the £400 offered and buy another.

I brought an XJ earlier in the year for just over £500, got 8months mot and was taxed. I use it an abuse it off roading.

Good news, the jeep needed a new rear pipe, front discs and pads and anti roll bushes but it passed the mot!
Looking forwards to another year of motoring....
