Fook me how loud do they click. Having never had a lunch box locker before  and not experienced one, i was supprised as to how bloody loud they click when you make a slow turn and how harsh they feel. All the gaps are within the correct tolerance and installed to the instruction manual, peace of pee to install really. Are they all this loud?. Rob

er yes but they do quieten down but not much.

I have a Sparton in my 6 and to be honest I can't hear a thing, but what a difference offroad it makes having it in there, yes and bloody simple to install. Actually a great piece of kit.

I have a spartan too and a few people haves said, OOo summat wrong with that chap, dont sound too good does it  :icon_rolleyes: they just dont understand  :icon_lol:

I've run Aussies front and rear and not found them not to be that noisey, just some small clicking, what condition are your thrust washers in? Seem to remember the instruction manual going on about them and different oil can make them quiter?

Hi Gents,

On the subject of auto lockers Spartan/Aussie/Lokka etc, I've had no experience with them but can see the benefits of any type of Diff lock, but I will need to be doing lots of Road driving while i'm here in Aus, maybe upto 1000km a day.

What are they like on Road? Handling etc? I'm guessing running in 2WD should be ok due to the free moving front Prop?

And is it wise to change the front Joints oput for newer/stronger/Greasable ones?

I was thinking about fitting one upfront, as I dont think the rear LSD/Diff carrier Would take one?

One last thing,  any thoughts Diff locks in Sand? good or bad? Would I just be digging holes?

My CJ6 has one in the rear, its road legal and I drive it to and from events, to be honest I don't even notice it, the only time is sometimes at low speeds going round roundabouts you might get a little bit of pushing but that's it. If your running one in the front I would install lock out hubs if you can so that you have a complete open diff when running on the road, because even in 2wd you will still get both front wheels moving at the same speed/time.

I don't run the greaseable  UJ's as I'm of the opinion once you add a oil/grease gallery through the joint you effectively create a weak point in the joint. I run good quality non greaseable ones on mine.

I think your correct in saying the lunchbox lockers won't work in a LSD carrier but check with others as I may be wrong

Sand driving is something I do know about as I is something I did a lot back home in NZ, the main thing in sand is BHP as the sand absorbs so much of the Jeeps energy and you find yourself constantly having to increase the gas the further you go, especially on uphill gradients. The other thing that helps is big wide tyres to reduce ground pressure. The other thing that is quite odd is AT tyres do very well on the sand and MT's do relatively poorly. As for a locker I would say it would be a good thing as you need all the traction you can get, I never ran one as I could not afford one at the time but I had a fresh V8 under the hood so that helped.

Thanks, yeah I read up that A/Ts perform better on sand, and wider tyres or lower pressures were best, anything to increse the footprint/weight distribution of the vehicle through the tyres.


I was thinking mostly about budget, in regards to an Aussie/spartan locker, I think the free wheel hubs would increase the cost and the work. Giving me more moving parts/weak links to worry about? And maybe run the price upto that of a cheaper Air/cable locker?

Something to think about anyway......  :017:

Aussie lockers can only be fitted in an open diff carrier, make sure you get the right one as gear ratios only fit certain ones, when I regeared my YJ it needed a different carrier up front but the rear was fine.

They are clever things and on tarmac open up to allow different wheel speeds on the same axle.

Off road they are awesome and allow lower speeds and therefore more control, if you have a heavy right foot then you'll probably break something further down the drive train such as UJ's, I run stronger ones and a gentle style off road has resulted in lots of trophies in punch hunts and often beating the guys in the class above me.

As ever with modifications you need to plan and try to foresee any knock on effects.

If you have an LSD in the rear why not start with a front locker, often people go for the rear first, but often it's the front that loses traction first as when climbing the vehicle weight holds the rear wheels on the deck, I fitted a front locker first and when on road in 2WD it was fine, off road was awesome and you could see it finding the traction and getting up steep rocks with ease. I fitted a rear one some months later with no real changes to on road driving.

I have a Spartan in the rear axle and a trutrac lsd in the front, I did have a trutrac rear but fubar'd a shaft as it was in a d35c, I had the opportunity of a chrysler 8.25 (stronger) axle but also had pinion bearing trouble with the dana, so went for a Spartan rear as I didnt have the worry of setting up the ring and pinion if I went down the lsd/locker route, its quite a nice setup as if I use 4wd on the road there isnt a problem with windup or skipping across the front axle  :greggmo:

I used to have an Aussie locker in the front of my 3.2 V6 trooper trialler. It made a MASSIVE difference to it's offroad capabilities. I'd highly recommend them as long as you are confident you have some good front joints. Before I had it I broke none, after I did tend to break them quite often. I'd frequently carry on the day after removing the broken shaft with no problems though. 3WD rules!

Never really noticed any loud clicking though, it was quite a quiet ratcheting. Although it was quite loud, so maybe that was why. Never used on road either.

I bought them direct from http://www.aussielocker.com/ if you buy two then the postage works out better...

If your XJ has a slipper then you will need an open carrier.
