Chap at works MR2 2000 model
« on: December 27, 2012, 01:25:22 PM »

He came in today and reported the following:

Loss of power
Metallic noise.

I have been out but its a bitch to see anything on with the engine layout and its pissing it down.

But:

When the car is cold, it doesnt sound to bad but as it warms up there is a metallic sound
No water in oil,
No sludge on oil cap
No contamination in engine antifreeze.

But he said he checks the oil every week and it was ok on Sunday, no today there is hardly a drop in it and no signs of external leaks,
On running there is some blue / white smoke out the exhaust.

I am thinking valve seals as a possibility, and the metal sound is an engine running on very limited oil.

Any thoughts?

nope if its engine is buggered you are looking at upto a grand to get it replaced , what it does have going for it is, its a gay car so has potential purchase for you written all over it!

if it was valve seals , it would not use so much oil  and with the combination of white smoke ( commonly known as steam) it sounds like a cooked block.

The 1998-2002 1ZZs are known to either eat bearings (connecting rod and mains) and/or burn oil. They tend to exhibit these symptoms sooner the harder the engine is run.

Looks like its FUBAR then,

If its not a cheap fix (which is isnt going to be) I think he will scrap it.

Its a bit scruffy around the edges as well.

MR2's are known for eating bottom ends unless good oil is used & changed regularly (every 3k) they are also a pig to work on, proper scraped knuckles time! they aren't the easiest thing to get engines out of either!
sounds very much like the bottom end is about to let go, if your lucky just big ends, but chances are it's mains which means engine out & crank re-grind, unless it's mint & he loves it, it's scrap! It's repairable but not worth the effort or in his case the financial outlay! they weren't a good car anyway, most went backwards through armco barriers on motorway slip roads, they gave lift off oversteer a bad name!!!! The only MR2 worth having is a mint original MK1, pref a turbo! they were a proper roller skate!

As Rob said, I worked out a rough price doing what would be needed and a grand would be cheap.

I will let you know if he made it home today, 25mile over the peaks. It was struggling to climb hills this morning he said.

Are they worth breaking? Its got hard top on it?

Jay, if you can get it cheap I know where there is a very good bottom end (head gasket gone) i put a whole engine in one earlier this year. If the engine is fooked, the car is worth 500 quid, yes it's worth breaking but they are a bit specialist & you will be left with quite a lot left over! They have a very active club scene, which might be worth joining to get rid of some of the rarer bits, but unless it's cheap & I mean cheap i would stay well clear, more hassle than it's worth!
If you want to make money selling cars, (I have sold thousands) people these days want cheap tax, cheap to insure & small engines! my best sellers always have been diesel estates & people carriers! you can sit on soft tops & 2 seaters far too long to make them worth while! yes 4x4's are a winner at this time of year but not as much as they used to be!
the only one's I can still make good money from are freelanders, blown head gaskets (which i then sell with a lifetime warranty & never done one twice as I do them right first time) IRD units & viscous couplings make them very cheap buys & a days work to make right

You haven't mentioned if it is a turbo model?
If the turbo seals have gone then the oil will disappear out the exhaust and the metallic noise is the turbine wheel trying to work it's way out due to fooked bearings - so no turbo = no power, metallic noise = turbine wheel in self destruct mode.

Ask him if it was smokey? oh and don't drive it as the turbine wheel remnants may work their way into the cylinders :011: :011:

A plausible answer but it may well be too late for that :die:
