YJ dana 30 Re gear??
« on: February 12, 2013, 06:37:12 PM »

Newbie in need of some expert advice... Right I've got myself a mostly standard YJ and have managed to get a G-wagon rear axle with 4.88:1 gearing off of a member of bertys. now the logical thing here is to get the front re-geared and here's where I'm starting to get info overload :017:

I've had a look in the workshop and online and found some info but it does seem to be a fair old job, so does anyone know where is best to buy the bits needed to get the job done. I'm assuming I might as well do the bearings and seals at the same time so this looks like a full overhaul, then I'm thinking I might as well get a front locker at the same time so as the time and thinking goes on this seems to be turning into a a very expensive operation  :icon_eek:

So is there anything I'm missing here, would it maybe be easier to find a more sensible pair of axles? or is there maybe an easier way to sort this regear without busting the bank, Also is there maybe a decent machine shop in the SE who can do the front axle for me? as this would probably saves loads of head scratching

Axles from a 2.5 petrol cherokee will have Chrysler 8.8 with 4.10 and Dana 30 in front cutting brackets and sliding under your YJ will allow skinny 33s for about £500 all in :icon_biggrin:

cheers for you reply wildwood, that does seem an easier option. Do all the 2.5's have these magic 4.10's  :icon_biggrin: And if I decided to go to go this route what lockers would you reccommend? as I'm hoping this one will be nice and capable :icon_super:

I'm trying to weigh up the options so please bare with me here. The G wagon rear has a factory locker which will need me to supply either compressed air or hook up some sort of hydraulic option. It also needs to be reassembled so I'll need bearings and the rest. It also needs prop and breaks sorted which will mean a disc conversion, calipers etc. On top of that the front will need the re-gear to the front as mentioned in my firts post so realistically how many beer tokens do you rekon this will end up at  :017: On the plus side I'm not bad with the spanners and have a mate who is extremely creative with machineing and fabrication.

The jeep will be running the same 4" lift you had on your old YJ which Robsrotti has now. so the world seems quite small in jeepland :13:

2.5 petrol XJ Cherokees  do have this axle combo and Lockrite or Aussielocker or is that Ozlocker....basic lunchbox locker will fit and do the job admirably cost about £300 per end can be done in the driveway with no special tools and away ya go....

Not the ratio you wanted I know but then recycled axles at £500 and £600 worth of bits and you're done....

Otherwise you could be into £1500 per end if ya go for it at 4.88

Making a lot of sense bud, thanks for your input. £1500 per end will take a bit more saving so looks like a couple of cherokee axles and a nice set of 33's for now. You mentioned narrow 33's earlier. so if its 2.5 axles would a nice set of 33x12.5x15 muds on 8J modulars do the trick?

Yup 35s and 36s will work Tis just the weight that is the enemy of the gearing and the life of the front UJs  .Also will feel a slug on the road.
Other wise it will work offroad really well
