Help! Passages foot well leak!
« on: February 05, 2013, 09:26:43 PM »

Just jump in the jeep to get some stuff, thought I'd grab the old coke can and seen the floor mat was wet..... Weird? Then I felt the carpet and holy shit it was ringing! Floor mat is hanging on the house radiator as a type and I'm worried sick! Only day I can get to inspect it Saturday.

Anyone had this...?

Please help

Cheers

Check that the AC drain isn't blocked. Otherwise could very well be the screen

I've had the same. Was it wet on top of the mat, or only below it??

To dry the carpet I removed the first two screws of the plastic that runs along to the left of the passenger seat, then swiveled the kick-panel out of the way (I didn't have a socket long enough to reach the nut to remove it properly). I could then just about tug the carpet up.

Once up, I soaked up as much water as possible with some super-absorbent sponges (like these http://www.amazon.com/Smart-TV-Absorbent-Density-Sponges/dp/B005CB63BW). I wrung them out, and drove around for a few days with the foot heaters on full, and the carpet pressed against the sponges which drew out most of the water, then dried everything completely for a few hours with a hairdryer.

While the carpet was still rolled back I talcum powdered the floor pan to find where it was coming in.

For ideas as to where it could be coming from, see this thread:

I've never noticed it before! Had a new windscreen from previous owner. Seals look good.

I would put the floor heaters on but they only blow through defrost ARGH!!!!!

I've got a wet Hoover so il vacuum the carpets once I strip it out Saturday,
Drive around for a few days with talk on the floor as suggest and see where it comes from.

Il keep it post what I find

In case you don't know - the weather strip around the windscreen is only for show. Pull it back and have a look under there, as the screen is bonded in. I can't imagine you'll be able to see much though, as I couldn't.

Just lift some of the flooring and it soaking underneath. Might just get it down the garage and ask them to sort it.

Right then guys!

Just stripped the interior and carpet!!!

No rust! Thank god. But have notice the door is not sealing aswell as the driver side. Did have time to spray test with a hose but I'm sure it's coming from that door. There's not water running from under the dash nor the window.

Let me know if you find somewhere to get door seals - I'm on the lookout for one to rule that out as the source of my leak too.

just watched wheeler dealers and they tracked a leak by using a smoke machine in the car - fill it up with smoke and then watch where the smoke leaks out - seems a good idea, will try it out on the XJ and see what happens

:hysterical: :hysterical: you will never find it then, it will come out everywhere  :003:

On a serious note I have had the same recently, I know I do tend to submerge the thing occasionally but this was different, I discovered on mine it was the silly little rubber things that is near the top hinge and they partly cover the door seal, ripped em off and it seems ok now, I know you said nothing coming from under the dash but it would be worth checking the coolant level as they do suffer leaking heater matrix's. Hope you find it cos it is very annoying  :icon_biggrin:
